Publisher's summary

The last thing Wilder Abbott needs is a houseguest. Solitude has been his stoic companion for nearly a decade. He prefers to brood over his mistakes in seclusion. Besides, he gets enough social interaction as a high school science teacher in Calamity, Montana.

But when his oldest friend calls, begging for a favor, Wilder begrudgingly agrees. For the next two months, he’ll give up his guest room to his friend’s little sister.

Iris Monroe isn’t the girl Wilder remembers. Gone is the shy, quiet mouse 10 years his junior who always had her nose in a book. Grown-up Iris talks too much and asks too many questions, especially about his past. And her bright smile and clear blue eyes are hard to ignore.

Two months. He just has to survive two months. Except Iris is as nosy as she is beautiful. And his secrets prove hard to hide when she’s living under his roof.

Ms. Sunshine Meets Mr. Grumpy

Opposites attract in this book, The Brood. Iris is a tattooed extrovert who comes into Wilder’s life for what was supposed to be a 2-month stay. He's a teacher, she's an influencer, and her brother is his friend. Wilder was a grump, but he grew on me. I loved the surprise plot twist! The narration was fantastic, too!

The Brood

Didn’t need all the bad words!
Would have still been a good book without them

Great story, excellent narration.

Perfect book to wrapped up my weekend reading marathon. I love every page, best friend’s little sister, shared a house for a few weeks, he’d broody, she’s sunshine and light. Perfect trope combo, low angst, interesting story, lovable characters. The story is sweet but with enough depth and spice to keep me interested. Exactly what I was in the mood for.

• Thoughts:
This book was so great! I feel in love with each of the individuals and then, obviously, together as the couple. Ifeel Devney has a way in her writing to make you just forget that anything else exists other than the book she wrote. Lol. I had this book done in a day. Both characters had to heal from their own past issues. They are both equally guarded, yet with one another, they open up and slowly let their walls down. So not only do we get to see them come together as an explosive couple, but we watch them heal. I loved it!!

Narrators: Ryan Hudson and Ava Erickson were the narrators, and they were finaminal!!

Calamity and its characters are better and better

Loved Iris and this uncomplicated sweet story. With the town of Calamity and its rich characters from your earlier books by it adds to ever story that much more for background building richness. Please keep expanding the town and stories they're worth it.

Another fantastic story

Devney is a master at writing stories that draw you in. Calamity Montana is a place I’d love to visit. The couples and their journeys touch all the feels. I love the family dynamics. Hope there’s more to come.

Loved every page of this listen!

Devney Perry does it again!
A wonderful unique story about a woman who embraces her individuality, and a man broken due to a major loss in his life. Great dialogue, great romance, and enough angst that you can’t stop listening! Really, love this book!

Low angst story, annoying male narrator

Devney Perry’s books are an automatic click when I need easy escapism that brings some heat 🔥🔥. I love the Calamity Series. I have pre-ordered every book. For The Brood, who doesn’t like a strong, unapologetic heroine who has a vulnerable side we can all see ourselves in? Iris didn’t disappoint. And, please… give me all the hot, broody, book-reading heroes who have some regrets of their own. Iris was like a ray of sunshine for the sometimes grouchy Mr Abbott! I have to admit, I wasn’t surprised about the mini mystery (I think we can all see that coming) but how it played out in the end was a surprise… I enjoyed not being able to predict everything in the end!

In terms of the actual performance, the female narrator was SPOT ON. I’ve really enjoyed her other performances, and the characterization of Iris was perfect.
But, gahhh… there was so much potential for Wilder to come to life, for all of us to swoon, but YIKES… the male narrator’s speech pattern (prosody?) was VERY distracting. Am I alone, here? For anyone who plays music, every two words followed a 1/2 note- 1/4 note rhythm (3/4 time) and the tone/ inflection sounded like he was bumping down an annoying slide - up 1 note, down 2 notes, up 1, down 2… for EVERY. SINGLE. LINE. For the love of God, I found myself listening for the pattern he used throughout the entire book, and then would have to rewind and suffer through it again, because I missed the actual words. Oddly, when he portrayed the female voice, he didn’t use this speech pattern (Thank God!) I almost stopped listening, but… Devney… and,… Montana… and muscle-y bearded men… So I finished it, but wowzers, please don’t use this male narrator for other books. He might be in my top 3 LEAST favorite. Ever.
