Publisher's Summary

A broken man. A twist of fate. A second chance. From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Mistletoe Promise and The Walk comes the first novel in a riveting new trilogy that explores the tantalizing question: What if you could start over?

Chicago celebrity Charles James can't shake the nightmare that wakes him each night. He sees himself walking down a long, broken highway, the sides of which are lit in flames. Where is he going? Why is he walking? What is the wailing he hears around him?

By day he wonders why he's so haunted and unhappy when he has all he ever wanted - fame, fans, and fortune and the lavish lifestyle it affords him. Coming from a childhood of poverty and pain, this is what he's dreamed of. But now, at the pinnacle of his career, he's started to wonder if he's wanted the wrong things. His wealth has come legally but questionably, from the power of his personality, seducing people out of their hard-earned money. When he learns that one of his customers has committed suicide because of financial ruin, Charles is shaken. The cracks in his facade start to break down, spurring him to question everything: his choices, his relationships, his future, and the type of man he's become.

Then a twist of fate changes everything. Charles is granted something very remarkable: a second chance. The question is: What will he do with it?

The Broken Road is the first book in a much-anticipated new trilogy by beloved storyteller Richard Paul Evans. It is an engrossing, contemplative story of redemption and grace and the power of second chances. It is an epic journey you won't soon forget.

Surprising

Unsure exactly what I expected, The Broken Road delivered a nice surprise. Read with an unassuming, matter-of-fact delivery, the tone was reminiscent of a 40's gumshoe narrative without the melodrama. The story started slow, but built intrigue with every chapter while the main character morphed from an unethical, ruthless, corporate shyster obsessed with his own skewed image of the America dream, to a vulnerable, flawed man, eking out a home in my heart with each word. A morality play at its best, it unashamedly called out greed and guilt for the corrosive cancers they are. Well done, Mr. Evans; well done. My first novel by this author and my first audiobook ever, I will be back for more of each.

Unresolved.

I bought this book on the premise that it will be a story about what one does, given a second chance. It was not. It led up to the what if ... and then ended. Both my wife and I were unfulfilled and frustrated by the ending. You need a Paul Harvey to step in and say, and now, the rest of the story.

Just Okay

Very predictable. Not as good as Evan's book usually are. A little disappointed however always enjoy his voice and talent for story telling.

Where’s the rest of the book?

It just stops kind in the middle of the story. Where’s the ending? Very disappointing.

Too slow

The beginning and end were the best. The middle dragged on a bit too long. However most of this authors books are among my favorites - I have listened to The Walk Series twice and may do so again. Richard Paul Evans is also a great narrator. He should always narrate his own books.

Great story of principles

Would prefer a different narrator but Evans still has the passion. This story can help people who are in a rut. As this is fiction, I love the line that says (loosely) "Evans writes lies that help people discover truths "

Richard Paul Evans doesn't disappoint!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Broken Road to be better than the print version?

Yes. I love that it's narrated by the author.

What did you like best about this story?

I love stories about hope and redemption.

Have you listened to any of Richard Paul Evans’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I've read about all of his books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me cringe a few times. I hated hearing abut the beatings that the father dealt out to his family!

Any additional comments?

I sure hope Rick is busy cranking out the sequel because I can't wait to see what happens!

A lot to learn and think about.

I loved the story in this book and I loved that Richard himself narrated it! Everyone should read this book and learn a lesson about not allowing money and fame to cause the loss of what's important in life. Joyce Williams

Excellent read

I never grow tired of reading/listening to Richard Paul Evan's stories. This book hooked me in right away and I can't wait to follow the Route 66 journey with Charles.

Made me think of the song

Rascal Flatts wrote a song that kept coming to mind while I listened to this book
