Publisher's Summary

Now a Netflix film starring and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, this is a gripping memoir of survival and perseverance about the heroic young inventor who brought electricity to his Malawian village.

When a terrible drought struck William Kamkwamba's tiny village in Malawi, his family lost all of the season's crops, leaving them with nothing to eat and nothing to sell. William began to explore science books in his village library, looking for a solution. There, he came up with the idea that would change his family's life forever: he could build a windmill. Made out of scrap metal and old bicycle parts, William's windmill brought electricity to his home and helped his family pump the water they needed to farm the land.

Retold for a younger audience, this exciting memoir shows how, even in a desperate situation, one boy's brilliant idea can light up the world.

Critic Reviews

"Speaking in accented English, narrator Korey Jackson captures the lighthearted tone as William describes his early life in a remote Malawian village.... Korey Jackson succeeds in portraying Kamkwamba as the affable and motivating young man that he is." (AudioFile)

kids loved it

We listened to this on a long car drive and my 9 and 11 year old loved it. It was engaging, educational, inspiring and enjoyable. It fostered genuine compassion for the "starving people in Africa" and made us grateful for electricity, running water, plenty of food, and the opportunity for a good education. my kids say they hate reading and I keep telling them that if you embrace books and make them your friends, you can do anything. This book gave that idea flesh and bones.

Fantastic audible book!

I listened to this with my two boys, 7 & 9. I loved it and felt like it really painted a great picture of what life in Africa is like. The descriptions of famine were brutally honest and easy to understand for my kids. It is hard to listen to this book and not feel thankful for the life we have. The book also made us all feel like building. The story is amazing and the narrator is perfect.

Top 5 books I’ve ever read!

What an amazing story, such a smooth way to tell it, it’s inspiration, educational, motivational. I cried, I laughed. Listened to it with my kids and they didn’t want to stop listening.

Inspiring for all ages!

This book was so good! We began it on a road trip. My 11, 9, and 7 year old begged we keep it on for our entire trip. In essence they “couldn’t put it down”. The true account of a boy who rose above struggles and didn’t give up.

I also loved that my children could experience accounts of another culture through the eyes of the writer. A must read!

Inspiring Novel

The overall message of this novel inspires me to recommit myself to my dreams and aspirations. Trial, error and disappointments are not the end, but the beginning of discovery. I will use the sentence, "If you want to make it, all you have to do is try" as my motivation. I enjoyed the book.
