Publisher's Summary

Secrets! Magic! A midnight land of monsters!

When Eliza Winter finds a hidden room in her missing grandfather’s Gothic house, her world is turned upside down. Inside, below a stained glass window where moonlight shines no matter the hour, awaits The Book of Kindly Deaths, a terrifying collection of darkly sinister tales.

Desperate for clues to solve her grandfather’s disappearance, Eliza opens the book of ominous, enchanted stories and discovers that nothing is what it seems, and that sometimes fairy tales are true.

Soon, Eliza is forced to battle her darkest fears to save her family from the book’s guardian, the horrifying ghoul Grim Shivers. And as the pages turn, she finds herself tumbling into the heart of the Grimwytch, a haunted world of terrifying monsters where it’s forever midnight.

Delightfully creepy and dark

Eldritch Black’s The Book of Kindley Deaths is a delightfully dark and creepy YA story with a uniquely refreshing plot of 12 yr old Eliza who finds a magical book of stories. Hannibal Hills - Voice Actor and Narrator as always is freaking brilliant. Masterful writing along with masterful storytelling in the narration makes this a must listen

A great climb into the world where monsters live.

I was thrown a bit at the start of this story due to how quickly we seemed to dive into the dark and strange, Just as quickly I came to appreciate how fantastically put together the balance of present and past story lines was and how it guided the story and led the Heroine to come into her own. I will be looking to find the next book as it was certainly a cliff hanger ending that left you wanting more. The performance felt very clean and neat to the ear and I feel brought a lot to the table for how we see characters interact and how we learn about the dark and yet beautiful world of the Grimwitch.

I received this book in exchange for leaving an unbiased review.

Didn't work for me.

While the story was good, especially the second half, the way the author did the first part of the book didn't work for me. For me, it made it harder to follow.

Interesting adventure

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. Eliza suddenly finds a mysterious book about tales with sad endings. Thinking not much of it until suddenly she finds herself in her grandfathers house and he’s been gone for awhile. She’s than transported to another world where things are darker and more stranger than her world. Best pick for narrator.

Macabre and fantastical

** I received a free copy of this book for review purposes my review is voluntary and unbiased.**

This book is a great mix of Brothers Grimm meets Alice in Wonderland, with a little extra grotesque.

There is a lot of plot packed into this book but dissecting it would be hard without spoilers, so I'll just give you the basics. A girl discovers that her missing grandpa has a magical secret that connects between this and a supernatural world. Events take her through the looking glass, if you will, and she has some bizarre adventures.

The narrative style is interesting as a portion of it is journal entries from other characters point perpectives, and this allows us to pick up on several different aspects of the world that would be harder to learn about through the MCs PoV without using a lot of exposition dumping.

The author is a bit prosaic and descriptive much of the otherworld is givin hyper-detailed descriptions of which most things are quite grotesque. If you have a sensitive stomach perhaps not eating while listening to this book may be in order.

Overall this book is great, the main characters are likable the story is interesting and fun, the mystic world is familiarish if you are a fan of folklore, but different enough at the same time to not be predictable.

I rate it 9.5/10.0 a nearly perfect example of YA dark fiction.

LOVED listening to this story! It was a story that I had a hard time putting down. It had me rooting for Eliza and Shard... hoping for Tom's saftey.... The different monsters Black describes had my skin crawling.. Plan to read more of Black's books. I think I found another favorite author!

Mindbendingly different and a joy to read

At first I wasnt sure about this book as it is completely different to anything I have read / listened to before. It was the voice of Hannibal Hills that kept me intrigued. What a great choice to narrate this book. The short stories that are contained within the main novel itself are memorable on such a large scale and they all intertwine and weave so well within the main tale. It was the type of book that made it hard for me to put it down. It is refreshing ..different..and wonderfully written. I could genuinely see this being made into a tv series (Any producers reading this please take note ) I was given this book by the author/narrator in return for an honest and unbiased review
