Publisher's Summary

A global movement guided by love.

Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies.

The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world - for us all.

Awe-inspiring!

This book was brilliantly written and narrated. I could not stop listening. The concepts, intelligent critiques, and valuable tools make this both inspiring and incredibly practical. I have been on a radical self love journey for years, but this book just really nailed every aspect of a process so desperately needed for not only myself but society at large. Thank you thank you thank you Sonya Renee Taylor!

Listen to this!

I want to read this book over and over. It is absolutely amazing. Here are my takeaways: We cannot change the world without first changing ourselves. We cannot create a world of love and acceptance without loving and accepting ourselves. Our self includes our body. Sonya Renee Taylor is poignant and to the point. She gives you the whats, whys, and hows, but it's up to each of us to sort through our dislike, shame, and dissociate we have with our bodies. Despite the damage our capitalist society has wrought on each of us in distinct ways, it is up to each of us to mend and restore the relationship with our body. Radical self love is not only possible, it's necessary and urgent. Read this.

Thank you, Sonya Renee Taylor!

I am sure the hard copy is just as good but this spoken work of art is so raw and real it is one to keep at fingertips ready to hear again and share with friends.

Disappointing

I was so excited for this book and actually was tearing up within the first few minutes. After listening to almost 3/4 of the book, I realized that it's not really what I had needed or hoped. It's Sonya's soap box and vehicle for political and social matters. I guess I was wanting something I could listen to and feel inspired to love MYSELF more. I realize that loving ourselves and loving everyone is important, but I wanted it to be more focused on self-love. She does warn everyone in the book at the beginning, to be fair. I guess I just had high hopes I'd be able to relate to this book more. So disappointing :(

Inspiring narrative and language, powerful methods

An excellent book fighting against body shame, and discrimination of all types, that leads us into self-compassion and community with others.

Revolutionarily wonderful. But editors, take note!

I love this book and love hearing Sonya read her work, but to the producers of this audiobook --- you guys need to review this product for moments that needs editing. It seems like no one even listened to it before releasing it to the world. Every stumble over words is still in there and seems completely unedited.
Otherwise, this is a must read/listen for everyone!!!!!

Great Self-Love/Self-Help Reference

I just really enjoyed this.

There’s a lot of repetitive explanations and breakdowns of different oppressive systems that work against ALL of us humans, particularly for those of us living in rigidly capitalist structures (America cough cough). Sonya also gives several tips and insights in how to personally and practically combat these systems in your everyday life with intention. There wasn’t really anything new in this book if you, like me, are really into this type of literature. But I really loved her approach to the topic and the way she presented information.

It’s a super quick read/listen. Sonya's voice is very smooth, very evenly paced. This is one of those books however, where any mistakes made in the studio were kept in the audiobook rather than edited out, and that always pulls me out of the experience for a minute. Otherwise those there's nothing wrong with the audio at all, and sometimes it's much more rewarding to actually hear Sonya than just read her words. The book is uplifting, without patronizing or sugarcoating. I mean, we all struggle to love ourself sometimes, why not read a fun reminder to do some more intention investing in ourselves again? 10/10 recommend.
