Publisher's summary

Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place: a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer. There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn's pursuit of a wolf-witch is leading him where even the bravest men fear - on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

still suspenseful

I read this years ago but didn't remember much about it. on listening to it now, it was a little slow starting but before too long became very suspenseful--definitely recommend.

Excellent !

I am a Hillerman fan. I read them all as they came out. This was my first listen. The narrator was splendid and I highly recommend.

Now I know why these were on my dad's shelf

A fun, engaging, reading. The narrator feels perfect for the harsh beautiful country the story is told in. All in all I am very pleased and looking forwards to the next one.

Grueling

Not what I expected. Guys might enjoy it more than a woman like me. I found it difficult to visualize the situation they were in and the way the protagonist was thinking.

Slow and Steady

The AMC series “Dark Skies “brought me to the series narrator George Guidall just made me want to listen to this book. A little slow but well thought out and I look forward to the next book in Hillman’s series.

Worth every minute

There is a reason so many people love Tony Hillerman. The world he creates, his precise and beautiful language, his fascinating characters… and the ice cream, a great mystery. Enjoy your treat!

a great beginning story in a wonderful series

hard to believe this story is 50 years old.... set 1970 I think I read it in 72 the beginning of a long love of Tony hillerman stories of the Southwest with the characters Joe leaphorn and Jim Chee ... this well-researched story has great drama and wonderful twists and turns. the performance given in the audio version really brings it to life. brings the Southwest to life

On the road again, revisiting a classic.

I love revisiting the classics via Audio book. Great works never go out of style but my work doesn't afford me the pleasure of turning pages. Now audio books are one of my favorite travel companions.
