Publisher's Summary

Claire Stuart is looking forward to her first season in London when she slips next door to the churchyard to spend a few quiet moments alone. There, an unwanted encounter with the local viscount turns into an assault. Claire fights back and escapes with her virtue intact only to be blackmailed by his sister, Lady Regina, who witnessed the attack. Claire now faces ruin if she does not meet the terms of the blackmail - convince the Earl of Roydon to marry her, even though a long-standing arrangement has matched him with Lady Regina.

Noel Mallory, the Duke of Lamborton, meets Claire and is immediately enamored by her. He becomes frustrated, however, when she alternately seems to welcome his attentions and spurn them. Worse, she seems to be seeking the attentions of his best friend, the Earl of Roydon. Noel sets out to win Claire's love and discover the reason behind her confusing behavior.

Definitely interested in hearing more

This was the first time I've read/listened to a story by this author and I'm glad I did. I'm a big fan of historical romance and really liked this story. Plus, I'm a huge fan of the narrator, Valerie Gilbert. The story itself was engaging and held my attention the entire time I listened to it. There were times when I'd have to stop and do something else, and I really disliked having to do so. lol I'm definitely interested in reading/listening to more stories by this author.

A sweet clean read

A simple stroll in the churchyard turns terrible for Claire Stewart when she's attacked and assaulted by a local viscount. The viscount's sister, Lady Regina, witnesses the scene and instead of helping Claire, she threatens her. If Claire doesn't win over the affections of the Earl of Roydon, Lady Regina will tell all of London society about the attack and Claire will be ruined.

To save her reputation and that of her sisters, Claire agrees to the scheme. But when she meets the Earl of Royden, she's plagued with guilt and unable to feel more than friendship for him. It's the Earl's best friend, the Duke of Lamborton, who stirs her heart.

This is a sweet clean read with a brief description of attempted assault in the first chapter. It's a great choice for fans of historical romance, there are plenty of descriptions of the balls and assemblies they attended. The characters, especially Claire and the Duke, are likable and their intrigues and schemes kept me interested. The narration was well done, and fit the story well. Valerie Gilbert performed different voices for each character and was consistent throughout the book. Overall, it was a gentle Regency novel, a great way to spend a few hours.
