Publisher's summary

An exquisite WWII novel illuminating the strength of three women in occupied Paris, for fans of The Nightingale, The Alice Network, and The Lost Girls of Paris.

"A truly outstanding novel...reminds us of the power of love, hope and courage." (Heather Morris, number-one best-selling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz)

Paris, 1944

Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance.

When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary - including assassination. But Genevieve refuses to let her mother become yet one more victim of the war. Reuniting with her long-lost sister, she must find a way to navigate the perilous cross-currents of Occupied France undetected - and in time to save Lillian’s life.

In this heart-wrenching novel, best-selling author Karen Robards showcases the extraordinary lengths one goes to save their family from a German prison. A web of spies, the resistance, and a vivid portrayal of Paris in wartime.

I wanted to like her...

I really rather enjoyed this book with one caveat. I really wanted to like Genevieve but, found her to be annoying and petulant. Her emotional issues aside, I simply did not find myself drawn into caring about her or her wellbeing.

fantastic story with added suprises

Not Karen's typical plot and story lines. at first I wasn't sure about it. however after a few chapters I was drawn in as I always am with her books. Well written. expect something different. hopefully there is another to follow.

The BEST book!

This is by far the best book I have read all year! It was thrilling and keeps you on edge the whole way through the plot! Such a heartfelt book. The way the author wrote this is truly incredible. It was creative and the words spoke to you. You can visualize the whole story to the point you feel like you are there. The ending was perfect! This is a must read! I am definitely going to read more books from this astounding author.

Intricately woven drama

Definitely kept my interest with intense visuals. Not for anyone with a weak stomach or PTSD

Slow to start...

Really wanted to like this book but almost gave up
several times. Just so SLOW in the beginning, overly descriptive of feelings and the past. Ending was much better. Listened at 1.2x which also helped.

Brutal honesty about a horrible period of time

The description of suffering was so on point. The story was good and the characters well developed.
That generations suffering was captured well in this book.
