John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough (1644-1722), was one of the greatest military commanders and statesmen in the history of England. Victorious in the Battles of Blenheim (1704) and Ramillies (1706) and countless other campaigns, Marlborough, whose political intrigues were almost as legendary as his military skill, never fought a battle he didn't win. Marlborough also bequeathed the world another great British military strategist and diplomat, his descendant, Winston S. Churchill.

The northeastern quarter of the continent of Africa is drained and watered by the Nile. Among and about the headstreams and tributaries of this mighty river lie the wide and fertile provinces of the Egyptian Soudan. Situated in the very centre of the land, these remote regions are on every side divided from the seas by 500 miles of mountain, swamp, or desert. The great river is their only means of growth, their only channel of progress.

The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Historia
Initially, the Thirty Years War was precipitated in 1618 by religious conflicts between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. But the conflict soon spread beyond religion to encompass the internal politics and balance of power within the Empire, and then later to the other European powers. By the end, it became simply a dynastic struggle between Bourbon France and Habsburg Spain. And almost all of it was fought out in Germany. Entire regions were depopulated and destroyed.

Robert Tombs' momentous The English and Their History is both a startlingly fresh and a uniquely inclusive account of the people who have a claim to be the oldest nation in the world. The English first came into existence as an idea, before they had a common ruler and before the country they lived in even had a name. They have lasted as a recognizable entity ever since, and their defining national institutions can be traced back to the earliest years of their history.

Historia
Winston Churchill steered Britain through its darkest hours during World War Two. He was one of the 20th century's greatest orators, and the speeches that he painstakingly composed, rehearsed and delivered inspired courage in an entire nation. Churchill's output was prolific - his complete speeches alone contain more than five million words. On this special recording, the best and most important of those have been brought together in this historic volume.

Historia
Liberty or death - this was the choice the people of 14th-century Scotland faced if they rose up against their English ruler. Most would say it was no choice at all. Many of the Scottish nobles were English supporters. Few could be expected to rise up against the numerically overwhelming English army. The hero of the story, Archibald Forbes, joins the struggle for Scottish freedom led by the valiant Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965) was a British statesman, soldier and writer who served as Prime Minister of the UK from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. An economic liberal and imperialist, he was for most of his career a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955. He was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the US. These recordings capture 51 of Churchill’s speeches over 1934-45.

Historia
Johnson's monumental history of the United States, from the first settlers to the Clinton administration, covers every aspect of American culture: politics, business, art, literature, science, society and customs, complex traditions, and religious beliefs. The story is told in terms of the men and women who shaped and led the nation and the ordinary people who collectively created its unique character.

Wonderfully Classic Western Thinking
Churchill has a worldview that remains true and is sorely missed. This book is a wonderful and recharging "read".

Fantastic Primer
Churchill is a remarkable writer and historian. None of his wisdom, knowledge, or excellence is lost here. A true version of game of thrones for the ages.

Phenomenal Trip Through Early History
I have my differences with the idea of Churchill as a great leader. His gifts were many and so were his faults and a lot of the myth surrounding him drives out consideration of his darker qualities. But boy oh boy, he could write.
History as presented here is clearly on the side of the "great man" theory and there is little discussion of how the rest of the folks live. Despite this view, the story of England's early years is told in a compelling and highly interesting way.
For those looking to have an overview of how things progressed through the War of the Roses, this is the book. Narrator does a very fine job with some great prose.

Beautifully written history of Britannia
Churchill is incredibly verbose, but thoroughly entertaining in his seminal work. Definitely worth a listen before, during, or after a visit to Britain.

Birth of Britain
Winston Churchill's seminal work crackles right along through centuries of British depravity and triumphs, just enough detail and on you go (although one might wish to hear a bit more of the condition of the non-noble common man). Churchill spices his research with a generous serving of opinion in a way that only one who has "been there" can do. While it was launched decades ago it remains a very contemporary history.

Are you kidding me?
Let’s see. We want to rate the writing of Winston Churchill? Really? It’s perfect. If we lose all English literature but kept this, the Martians will be really impressed. The narrator is okay, not great. The story is well, history!

Churchill does a surprisingly good job
I think this is a rare example of a well-done history from a historical figure. The book is interesting both as a history of the birth of Britain in and of itself, but also in as much as it shines light on Churchill himself and how he sees his role, and the role of his country in the world.
