Great Story; OK Narration

I absolutely adored the story. I am from Connecticut, and I went to Georgetown. So these stories were a magic time machine (even the six-overtime game—maybe not the six-overtime game).

But they should have used a professional narrator.

The Big East

This book is a perfect complement to the 3430 documentary that I recently saw about the Big East. Some of the back stories of the personalities brought to life what I consider to be one of the greatest eras in basketball. My routine of watching Walling college big Monday and seeing what I did not know what the time would be future Hall of Famer’s going toe to toe and sometimes fist to fist I will never forget.

as someone who grew up with the Big East (Villanova '84) and was there for many of the early moments, this book didn't disappoint. great read and amazing memories.

author did a great job of balance and capturing all the key moments and personalities and the not so great (expansion) and the current hoops only iteration

I Miss The BIG East

The original Big East is my childhood and I really liked this… it was a perfect combination of lots of information on the beginning of the conference and a little bit of information on the end of the conference.

Deep Dives, Shallow Knowledge

This book raises an immediate question: if the author can’t pronounce the names of Jason Cipolla or Kueth Duany, why were they the right person to write it in the first place? While it does go deeper than ESPN’s 30 for 30, significant gaps undermine its credibility.

Jim O’Brien coached in the conference for over a decade and won the 1997 tournament, yet he isn’t mentioned once. Billy Owens gets a single passing reference. Scoonie Penn, God Shammgod, Malik Sealy—completely absent. Meanwhile, there’s an entire chapter devoted to a conference timeline, which feels unnecessary in the age of Google.
The overall impression is that the author’s familiarity with the conference begins and ends with moments that once cracked SportsCenter’s Top 10. That’s disappointing, especially given the wealth of history and personalities left unexplored.

That said, the sections covering the formation of the conference are genuinely engaging and well told. When the author sticks to that lane, the book shows flashes of what it could have been.
