Publisher's Summary

In his teens, Jim Carroll roamed the streets of New York, shooting baskets with some of New York's best "playground" stars, and shooting heroin with some of the city's most memorable street characters. The Basketball Diaries is his chronicle of those years. Written while in his teens, it is a literary tour-de-force and a stunning portrait of contemporary urban street life. The characters and incidents are moving and funny and sad, but always very real.

I just want to be pure.

I am a fan and knew what I was getting into. I wanted to hear Jim read this in the entirety. Didn’t disappoint.

Revieq

I generally enjoyed listening to this book. This is a general statement to meet requirements that don't allow for a simple star rating.

very raw and original.

this is a one of a kind story. some people may be uncomfortable with the content of the story and I'd argue those same people are uncomfortable with the truth. this is a real depiction of a place a time for a person of a certain age. well narrated, I enjoyed the plain honesty in this story.

Jim reads Jim

Carroll really has a knack for bringing out the humor and poetry in his work so even if you’ve read the book, it’s worth it to hear it in his own voice. Still makes me laugh after all these years, though I imagine it isn’t too politically correct nowadays. That’s OK it wasn’t then either.

I only wish there was more.

Jim Carroll has a unique voice filled with unexpected musicality and dissonance, perfectly suited to his writing. I have read the Basketball Diaries before, as well as his poetry and other writings. Hearing it in his own voice is always an unexpected treat. I only wish more of his work and readings could be found on Audible, or even this book in an unabridged form.

Not My Type Of Story

Just not the type of story I usually enjoy. Interesting though and the way it was read seemed to match up nicely.

A Bare Bones Coming of Age Story in NY Streets

A harrowing juxtaposition. Both an innocent coming of age story and a dark street tale of drugs, sex and crime. New York City and the 1960s social and political climate serving as the perfect backdrop.
