Publisher's summary

In this poignant capstone to the trilogy, the man called Barabbas—infamous former thief, murderer, and prisoner turned Christian—and his wife, Chanah, continue their mission of spreading the gospel across the known world as cauldrons of political and military chaos boil across the Roman Empire. Nero is increasingly erratic, and it’s only a matter of time before the sharp knives of imperial politics finish him off. Various successors vie for position. Who will strike first, and who will come out on top?

Meanwhile, the rebellion in Judea has intensified, the Jewish zealots exerting great influence over the minds of the people. General Vespasian and his son Titus aim to put a permanent end to the insurrection. How many lives will ultimately be sacrificed on the great altar of Jerusalem? Can the Jewish nation survive the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy? What will become of the Jewish Christians and the apostles and sisters who lead them? And where will Barabbas and his family find lasting peace?

A new favorite

This series has become a recent favorite. Through this trilogy I've come to realize that while stories of magical knights, time travel, and other staples of fantasy are exciting and enjoyable, I also need stories of men who become fathers. Men who recognize their need for God and seek Him out. I'm glad, and pleasantly surprised, I was able to listen to these books and discover such a man in Jesse Barabbas. A man infamous for his brief appearance in the New Testament, but largely unknown otherwise. A man in the classical world of Rome during a period with which I'm less familiar than other areas. A man of faith willing to walk great distances to see his family, to serve Christ, and to show his faith.
I put this trilogy next to The Work and the Glory for the hope and faith it inspires, the history and geography it introduces and for the characters I was permitted to spend time with.
I am left wondering what else Bishop Jesse Barabbas does with his life. Whether he passes first or Paul. Does he serve as a seventy, or does he stay closer to home and build up the Church there? Whatever followed after the epilogue, his legacy was spread far and wide in this telling of a "what if..." story.
Thanks for the journey, Brother House!
