Publisher's summary

In late 1853, Parley Pratt received a letter from his brother and fellow member of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, Orson Pratt. Orson had committed himself to contribute to the publication of genealogical information on the descendants of their ancestor Willian Pratt, an English Puritan who had migrated to New England in the 1630s, and wanted Parley to contribute to the publication, too.

The compiler of the information, a Congregationalist minister, had asked Orson that he and Parley, known to be prominent religionists, write autobiographical sketches for the planned publication. In reply to Orson, Parley was reluctant, writing that “a mere sketch of the outlines of [my] truly eventful life would occupy several hundred pages”. In subsequent correspondence, Orson pressed Parley, praising Parley’s “interesting, easy, flowing” writing style and observing that if they worked together under the “dictations of the Holy Spirit”, they might “write something that shall hereafter prove a blessing to our brethren”. It would take four more years for Parley to write his autobiography, and it would not be published until 1874.

Parley P. Pratt’s autobiography is one of the great personal stories of early Latter-day Saint church history. It is an eventful and thrilling story of a man’s complete faith in and total commitment to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as the price he paid and the blessings he received for pursuing such a course.

The story presented in Parley’s autobiography has enthralled Latter-day Saint readers from its 1874 publication to the present day and has shaped many Latter-day Saints’ views of early church history.

Uninspired Narration

While I have read the Autobiography of Parley P Pratt at least twice and love his life story his narrator is obviously not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is so unfamiliar with church terminology, names and places that his mistakes in pronunciation are laughable and make listening to the story annoying. If someone is narrating a religious book about anyone or anything of any denomination it should be by someone who is a member of that institution and who lives it and loves it. It would have been very easy to procure a narrator who would have loved to narrate this amazing life story, maybe even a descendant of Apostle Pratt

I enjoyed learning more about Parley P pratt'

a bunch of lines which the orator has duplicated throughout the recording. Less frequent in the last quarter of the recording. I did not care for the orator, I'm just glad I got through it.

Incredible life a & man

As a Church member I have known of Parley P Pratt my entire life, but his dedication to the Gospel as this record of his life exhibits is truly beyond anything I knew.

Great book. Bad read.

The material is great. Reading not so much. Abundance of mispronounced words and bad edits. Grateful to have it for my commute but the accent is distracting. Should not have been charged a credit for this.

Good book

Good book, more detailed at first and then a bit scattered at the end since he was murdered unexpectedly

Wow! Powerful!

I could just feel the
spirit of PP Pratt come through in this. I felt strengthened by how much he sacrificed for God & others with very little complaints. He also just matter of fact expected miracles. A trait I find so admirable.
I was sad when the book was over.
The speed of narrator was a little fast and I didn’t want to miss anything - s I slowed it down.

Excellent Autobiography

The hardship’s endured are almost beyond understanding. The story line keeps you on the edge of your seat. Last few chapters something changed in Parley’s life and he no longer was a force to be reckoned with. Still all in all terrific book!

Amazing History

This is a must read for any faithful seeker of God, and especially any red blooded member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which church is undoubtedly the Kingdom Of God on Earth.

(The performance gave it a slightly prideful arrogant tone… could be my personal projection. I would like to hear it in a more steady and peaceful tone.)

I felt like Bro. Pratt was in my living room

It’s a history of Parley Pratt, an apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. If you enjoy that genre, you’ll love this book, the reading was wonderful I felt like Parelli was in my living room telling me the story himself. And when you’re done, go listen to a voice of warning.
