Publisher's summary

Carmen has a secret, and his name is Dr. Micah Worthy.

Affairs aren’t permitted between staff members at St. Michael’s Asylum, but Carmen and her handsome young psychiatrist find a way to sneak in a kiss or two in empty storerooms when no one’s looking.

It doesn’t take long for her suspicions to rise, however, as she gets to know some of the patients. Why are some kept locked in their rooms, doped to the gills? And where are the two dozen patients whose names appear on the med lists, but whom she’s never met? Moreover, what’s so forbidden about the ancient passages snaking beneath the two-hundred-year old monastery?

Something’s off in the asylum, and when nothing seems to add up, Carmen and Micah unite to uncover the truth.

When staff members learn she’s on to them, the threats begin. Can Carmen report her findings before she ends up in the icy Atlantic?

Set on the rugged Maine coast in the dead of winter, The Asylum is an intriguing story of romance and danger, filled with characters you’ll love and breathless action that’ll keep you up way past your bedtime.

Awesome suspense and sins of avarice....

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this audiobook from start to finish. I chose to read along with it on KU (Kindle Unlimited) and it was a great experience. This story combines romance, intrigue, and delightful array of genuine, likeable characters (and some truly villainous ones) with an unremittingly suspenseful plot that keeps you hooked until the very end. There is no foul language, no graphic violence, and no explicit sex scenes to offend anyone, but the despicable deeds inspired by pure greed set against the creepy mystique of the asylum are more than enough to keep you enthralled right up to the satisfying conclusion of this story. The narrator did an excellent job of distinguishing the varied cast of characters by giving each a unique sound and cadence although, speaking as a native Texan, some of the southern characters did speak a bit too slowly (but maybe it just seemed that way because the suspense was so well-crafted that I was just anxious to know what would happen next). I highly recommend this book/audiobook to anyone enjoying a suspenseful, engrossing, diversionary read.

Carmen & Micah's Unconventional Love Story

Suspense isn't my usual genre of choice, but from start to finish, I was enthralled. I didn't realize this was part of a series, and listened to this first. The story could be a standalone and I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything. I usually like a bit more steam with my romances; this was pretty clean, aside from kisses and getting to second base. Gwendolyn Druyor's performance here reminds me of Johanna Parker from the Sookie Stackhouse (Southern Vampire) series. The pacing was just right and made for an entertaining short listen. #AudiobooksUnleashed

Excellent

The setting of an old Mansion set along the coast line of Maine adds to the suspense of this plot. Carmen takes a job, with the words that the pay is pretty good, the place not so. A retreat for the rich, but where are they, some are now missing. The heavy drugs for some. Then when her mother’s boyfriend is now missing, will her life be in danger as she finds out what really is going on. Another captivating story and the narration added to the story. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Wow! What a fantastic audio book!

I loved this audio book! It was so good! The story line started out with an attention grabbing event and continued to build and build as the story unfolded. Towards the end, I was on the edge of my seat, fearful, but eagerly awaiting what would happen next. This audio book had lots of tension and drama! The characters were likeable and engaging. The story wasn't predicable. The narrator did a great job. This book would make a great screenplay too. I would highly recommend this audio book to others.

Excellent action, characters, premise, and pace!

I found this story to be chocked full of action involving an array of great characters. As in any great book, some of the characters I absolutely loved and others I wanted to strangle, which, along with the attention-gripping premise, caused me to look forward to driving so I could continue to listen. A unique aspect of this author’s work, in my opinion, is the pacing - it is perfect for an audiobook. The story neither dragged nor went too quickly- I listen to audiobooks often and, all too often, either have to back the book up as the narrator is speaking too quickly or get bored - this was not the case for this book. It was engaging and enjoyable - highly recommend!
