The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop is a call to create healthy, sustainable, and empowering classroom communities. Award-winning educator Felicia Rose Chavez exposes the invisible politics of power and privilege that have silenced writers of color for far too long. It's more urgent than ever that we consciously work against traditions of dominance in the classroom, but what specific actions can we take to achieve authentically inclusive communities? Together, we will address how to:

  • Deconstruct our biases to achieve a cultural shift in perspective.
  • Design a democratic teaching model to create safe spaces for creative concentration.
  • Recruit, nourish, and fortify students of color to best empower them to exercise voice.
  • Embolden our students to self-advocate as responsible citizens in a globalized community.

Finally, a teaching model that protects and platforms students of color, because every writer deserves access to a public voice. For anyone looking to liberate their thinking from "the way it's always been done," The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop is a clear, compelling guidebook on a necessary step forward.

This is the way ti teach. The old system kills, and this vitalizes. Esta é a maneira de ensinar. A maneira antiga mata, e esta da vida nova.

This book speaks to my heart and my life. Many of the negative things in this book are things I have experienced in and outside of the classroom. Many of the "progressive" concepts are things I have put into place in my own life in and outside of the classroom. The concepts discussed in this book are larger than just a writer's workshop and can be used in every day life. I appreciate this guidebook so much.

This book gives a blueprint for being better humans in and outside of the classroom.

Despite holding an MFA, this is the first time I’ve felt as though I was truly participating in a writing course that speaks to the needs of contemporary writers. It not only feels relevant—it positions writers as active contributors to the kind of revolutionary cultural work R. G. Williams describes in Writers, Writing, and Revolution. For once, the workshop isn’t just about craft; it’s about recognizing our role in shaping movements and imagining new possibilities for collective change.

Difficult and deeply problematic to embrace Mothering as a pedagogy. But I enjoyed learning so many different strategies for building a generative classroom environment. Sometimes author smothers good ideas with her own piety. But this was more humorous than detrimental. I would recommend this books to colleagues.
