Publisher's summary

An epic new Star Trek saga by New York Times best-selling author Greg Cox set during the original Five-Year Mission!

The final frontier erupts into chaos as vast quantities of a rare energy source are discovered beneath the surface of Baldur-3, a remote planet beyond the outer fringes of Federation space. Now, an old-fashioned “gold rush” is underway as a flood of would-be prospectors, from countless worlds and species, races toward the planet to stake their claim.

The galactic stampede threatens the stability of neighboring planets and space stations, as widespread strife and sabotage and all-around pandemonium result in a desperate need for Starfleet assistance. Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise are dispatched to deal with the escalating crisis...which lies on the other side of a famously perilous region of space known as the Antares Maelstrom.

Great audiobook!

The story is classic Star Trek, on a grander scale than a 1960's TV show could afford. These are the characters we know and love, and the narrator does an amazing job bringing their voices to life. Can't wait to listen to more from this author/narrator combination.

It was awesome!

The writing captures the flavor of both Starfleet and the Federation that I had grown to love when I first fell for it. Hopeful, yet room to grow, not perfect, but not bleak like the modern interpretations of Trek. It was also one of the most positive examples of the Prime Directive that I have seen in years. Normally, the Directive is presented as a straightjacket at best, too extreme dogma to be obeyed at worst. This captures its intended purpose and that made sense. Mr.. Cox did an outstanding job with the plot and the subplots, each was interesting and didn't distract from each other. Mr. Petkoff did outstanding job reading the story, with his voices, accents, inflections, even mood. I was really caught up listening to it. This is a story I will be revisiting and expect to be one of my favorites in times to come. I thank them (and the whole audio crew) for writing and making it available to enjoy.

It was ok.

This was not my favorite Star Trek story. I get that it was trying to be "a mission" and not necessarily a Kahn or George and Gracey level installment. I just didn't grab me the way many other Trek novels have. Robert Petkoff was outstanding as always.

Many plots

Nice story with a few plots developing in parallel involving basically every crew member. Excellent performance by the narrator.

Good TOS story

Decent story, side stories that still held attention. I did like the nods to DSC. A little long but still entertaining.

Just like the old adventures!

Quite good. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this held my interest. The only thing I didn't like was how aggressive Sulu was. In general Starfleet usually doesn't just plow ahead outside of the law. His decisions were unilateral. Otherwise, it was a good story. The Narrator was excellent.
