Publisher's Summary

White light. Heat. A drawn-out moment of complete silence. And then the screaming starts.

An Underground carriage in London is destroyed by a suicide bomber. The injured and the dead litter the platform. But as a crowd forms at street level, Michael Pope knows that this is only the beginning.

Pope, head of top-secret Group 15, is tasked with finding the perpetrators of this atrocity and bringing them to justice, any way he can. He knows that the answers to many of his questions will lie at the end of the money trail, but he also knows that whoever funded and organized the attack will kill again for their freedom.

This is an operation that requires a very special kind of agent. Pope needs someone who exists outside of normality. Someone who floats above it, treading softly through a fractured life.

He needs the Angel.

Furiously Frustratingly BAD IDEA! AWFUL! NO! NO!

This isn't a novel, it's a chapter! How dare they not tell us? BEWARE... you will spend hours only to discover a "To Be Continued"! This is bait and switch... only pretending to be a story when it's mere part leading to a monstrous tease! I may still have bought this thing if they'd told me and I knew that I should prepare to read more, or at least that would be a demand. Self Indulgence on the part of the writer, the publisher and AudioBooks. NEVER sell me a part of a book without fore-notice. I am totally ticked off!

I AM RETURNING THIS PARTICLE OF A BOOK!

I hate cliff hangers

What disappointed you about The Angel?

I'm really disappointed with the way the ending of this story is left hanging. I would normally have bought the next book in this series because I enjoy the series but I don't like being bribed to get the next book and I found the lack of a conclusion very frustrating.

What was most disappointing about Mark Dawson’s story?

I enjoy a story that has a conclusion to it and, since I read for pleasure, a book without a conclusion is not what I'm interested in. Really, the book is not that long, it's not like the story would have been too long without a conclusion.

What does Napoleon Ryan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I find his voice is pleasant and his reading helps me to better visualize what's happening.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Angel?

I find the description of islamic hatred of infidels annoyingly long, this could have been cut back in length.

Any additional comments?

I like the Mark Dawson characters John, Beatrix and Isabella. I particularly like John's struggle with alcohol, it's interesting.

Great start to the Isabella Rose series!

Mark Dawson fans will recognize Isabella Rose as the teenage daughter of Beatrix Rose. Now in her mid teens and well trained by her now dead mother, Isabella is beginning to work with her mother's old organization. The listener should be made aware that this is a series and the first book does not stand alone; the end leaves you hanging. Nevertheless it is a great start for the young heroine. I look forward to the second book in the series.

Mark Dawson is a relatively new British writer. He is also one of the best thriller writers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Bad reading, bad research, unbelievable characters

I don't know if this is the worst male reader of female characters that I have heard, but today I really don't think that he was a good choice for a book with major female characters, you could even say a female lead character.

Ah, the shoddy research. There are many simple little things wrong.

Theoretically Manchester to Wick in 8 hours is possible, if there's no traffic, which is never true on the A9, and you can't make up time because of the speed cameras and police. So sleepy little Wick should be a great place for handing off a 'package'? But Wick airport is the departure point for transatlantic GA ferry flights, so there's always aircraft and people around.

There's no Tornado GR5, the GR5 is a Harrier and the Tornado is a GR4. If you take 600 rounds and shoot 600 rounds you don't have any rounds to put back in the safe. The only way to dry fire an AR15 is to cycle the bolt with the charging handle. While the bolt is back the hammer is held down. So the bolt is forward. If you now eject the magazine... well the bolt is forward, so how are you going to release it with the bolt release? If you are going to include detailed AR15 firing drills then talk to people who train with them. A Springfield EMP is a compact 1911, it shoots 9x21. The AR15 shoots 5.56x45, he made a point of that. So how is that shooting the same caliber in your rifles and pistols? Nobody accidentally loads those rounds in the other gun, switching to her 'preferred' 45 ACP would not have made any negative difference.

And after all this I am supposed to go for the pathetic hook and buy the next one? No thanks.

No more hanging endings please

This book got hit by many who first read this book, with its hanging ending before the 2nd book was available. Perfectly understandable. No problem for those of us coming in later and can buy book 2 immediately

But no more of this, Dawson, or you are going to start losing customers

Not up to Mark Dawson's usual great writing

Not one of Dawson's best efforts. Way too slow. Disappointing ending. John Middleton is a much better character in his other series and those books are much better written and move along at the right pace. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Just Okay, and left me hanging.

This was just okay for me. I have a hard time with this girl being 16 years old. I know she is the daughter of spy but still.
There was a lot of stuff going on that didn't necessarily need to be there.

It wasn't a bad book, It just didn't make me want to keep going with the series. It was slow going too. Kept waiting and waiting for more.

As for the narration it was okay. I think I would have liked Jay Snyder a little better for this book. Just my opinion. Napoleon Ryan does a good job on the female voices and the accents well.

Outstanding!

Mark Dawson really knows how to tell a story and put your right in the middle of it. The narrator, Napoleon Ryan, is a pleasure to listen to. One of my favorite series.

starts well......

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not really, the book ends so suddenly that I thought my MP3 had skipped a part, its not fair to leave a reader with all stories unfinished in the middle its as if the writer did not know how to go further. (if there is a second part which I can not find an answer too, I would recommend getting the two together and not get this one until then!)

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Angel?

the sudden end made me furious!!

What does Napoleon Ryan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The characters are individual and would make it easier I suppose.

Did The Angel inspire you to do anything?

Yes get angry about the loose ends there should be a warning that the book ends so sudden with nothing finished in the story line!

Any additional comments?

If this was my first book of this writer I would wonder if all his books would end like this, its well written entertaining end then nothing.......... did the writer run out of ideas?? please tell us before hand there is (i think there must be ) a second part to it at least then I would wait until the second part is out and have one finished book. Very disappointing, it could have been a 5 star all the way had the book not ended the way it has!!! waste of time for just the one "half"book.

Great story.... but awful narration

Now I love Mark Dawson's stuff. I think it's taut, energetic and a great, great read. There is no lingering passages of description, it's straight to the action and the story and I love it all. This book is no different.. however, I'm sorry to say that the narration on this audio book is horrible. I mean really really horrible. Nothing against the narrator, but he is so completely unsuitable for this type of book. His clipped, 'Queens English' accent is totally out of place and it's sounds jarrring all the way through. The woman who interjects as the female parts is way too breathy and seductive for the characters and it's honestly the narration totally ruined a fantastic novel. It was called 'brilliance Audio' by Audible, but I can't find anything brilliant about it. It pains me that the next book in the series is narrated by the same people and I am going to have to suffer it for another 8 hours... just to find out what happens. The book really does end abruptly and it's clear it's Act 2 in a series of 3, but don't read this is you haven't read any Beatrix Rose novels or the first one in the series. Great writing... appalling narration.. I feel bad saying that, but it is true.

Left hanging - very frustrating

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Extremely frustrating and unsatisfactory!

Any additional comments?

I was enjoying the book until the abrupt and totally unsatisfactory end. The Angel is only half a book with no sign of the follow up at this time. I would be slow to invest any more time in this author. Shame because it has great potential.

No ending so wait until follow up is available if you like this author

Thriller that had no satisfactory ending. Obviously there should be another book or maybe even more to complete the story, but no indication of this is given until it ends, just leaving you frustrated that you have to wait for the next instalment. I probably won't bother with that in case that one ends similarly.

enjoyed the vivid and well paced story thays well read. for me it leaves too much unresolved and feels like a too obvious "you'll have to buy the next one to find out more ploy" not sure I will.

Wrong voice for the charactors.

Really disappointed with delivery of voices, unbelievable voices e.g. Posh guy with irritating accent laying down an tone and voice which is really hard to relate to. Then a 40something women trying to talk like a 15 yr old. The heroine, an ex SAS who sounds posher than Boris Johnson straight from Eton. I love Mark Dawson stories normally and can live with being short changed in the storyline but it's a lot harder to swallow when delivered by someone advertising Jaguar cars. Sorry Mark, will try something else until you check who reads your stories.

Average

Had a good underlying plot and is obviously written to be part of a series. However it fell apart mid way as a no longer functioning bureau implausibly recruits a 15 year old to infiltrate terrorist cell. Everything downhill from there, I won't bother with the follow- ons
