This humorous and nostalgic novel takes the listener back to the carefree days of boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up.

Just what did boys do in a small Midwestern town during the mid-1800s, a time when there were no televisions, no arcades, and no videos? They whitewashed fences, floated down rivers, traded marbles, formed secret societies, smoked pipes, and, on occasion, managed to attend their own funerals. Yes, they may have been a bit mischievous, but as Aunt Polly said of Tom when she believed him to be dead, "He was the best-hearted boy that ever was." Aunt Polly's sentiments reveal one of the cardinal tenets of Twain's philosophy: In this deceitful and infirm world, innocence can be found only in the heart of a boy.

Audible is the only way to go. The words are clearly pronounced and exactly the exclamations that are needed and perfect timing between sentences. I love listening to Audible

Mark Twain lives up to the story teller reputation that he has been given. The story moves along swiftly but you are given a chance to appreciate the characters and scenery he places them in.

The narrator did an alright job. His pacing was good and there was some variation in the characters...some. But I think I've grown used to multiple narrator productions and spoiled by some unbelievable voice talents so this may not be fair to Mr. Gardner. His work did not take away from the experience but I feel it just didn't add much. This was worth a credit and I feel you will believe so as well.

A Classic

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Such a classic that all should read - a boy's life of adventure. This is a very clear and coherent reading, but it lacks that Southern voice, the drawl. I missed it as I listened.

What other book might you compare The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to and why?

There's no close comparison - this is Maniac Magee without a moral compass.

What three words best describe Grover Gardner’s performance?

Clear, Northern, Animated

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes - but life doesn't allow that (I have kids).

Any additional comments?

I like to listen while I'm doing something else around the house, and this was a pleasant book - certainly helped ease the frustration of painting the kitchen.
