First published in 1884, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is among the first novels in American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English. Some have called it the first Great American Novel, and the book has become required reading in many schools throughout the United States.

The story is set along the Mississippi River in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas around 1840. It depicts the development of Huckleberry (Huck) Finn, a boy about thirteen years old. Huck has to find a way between his belief in the right thing to do and what most do believe to be wrong.

It was hard for me to listen to the word ‘nigger’ used so frequently both with disdain and common place. I looked up some expressions used at the time of the initial publication that I was not familiar with. I reacquainted myself with this book after reading the book James (paralleling ‘Jim’s’ perspective of the same experience). I think I will reacquaint myself with Tom Sawyer. The narration was diners.

It ought not be censored, however…

A fun adventure of 2 boys and a runaway slave, with the author poking fun at everyone!

It’s a classic for a reason. Love the wittiness and imagination of this boy. So cute how he ties the story together.

Great classic

Combine this read with Percival Everett’s “James”. The complete adventure. We are completing our American character. A double irony one might say.

Important for embracing history
