Anger is a universal human experience. For many of us, it is the single greatest challenge in every area of our lives. We have been taught that anger itself is a sin and should be avoided at all costs. However, anger is also understood to be 'nature's way' of preparing man to respond in times of danger. How then do we go about bringing this volatile emotion under the Lordship of Jesus Christ? Gary Chapman gives us the perfect tool to answer this and many other questions in The Other Side of Love.

If implemented? Magnificent!
As a family and marital therapist I wholeheartedly suggest following the practical guidance of this book will transform even healthier parent/teen relationships. Implementing the steps outlined will take patience, diligence and consistency over an extended period of time (far more than a few weeks)! Doing so may transform most relationships in your sphere of influence. Dr. Chapman also shares important insight about this development stage that will help you understand your teen. This seems to be lacking in so many other parenting books.

Helped shed much needed insight into the teen life.
I have read the 5 love languages before and was debating on whether purchased this audio book would help with my distant teen or not. I am glad I did. There was some much needed insight and self reflection. It was easy to listen to and already, within 1 week of practicing some of the suggestions for filling my teens love tank, I am experiencing positive reactions. I highly recommend this book, even to people (who like me) KNOW the 5 love languages.

Worth repeating!
This book was so helpful! It truly spoke to the things I’m currently experiencing with my teens (both good and bad). This book shines a light on parental flaws and points is down the path of better parenting -but it doesn’t let teens off the hook. I strongly believe that my family will be better for generations to come because of this book. I plan to listen to it as often as needed.

No interesting insights
Not an intelligent book. Just a bunch of cliches. Not scientifically based. I feel like every sentence that he writes has been written a million times before, and much of it isn't even true but just assumptions that people pass on to one another.

I have turned the corner after reading this book
Practical advices. Realistic situations and examples. Not lecturing or patronising like some other parenting books. It reminds me that my sons are growing up and going through a transition. This helps me seeing things from their points of view so I can help them better. We tend to treat them in the same way we did when they were younger. They could be feeling unsure of themselves going through this stage. We would add more pressure by telling them what they should do, how they should be like... I am recommending this book to a couple of girlfriends who are going through the same stage.

Be aware of the 1st publishing date
The author may have been on the right path but that was the beginning 2005 and now nearly 20 years later it needs rewriting. When your son brings back a pregnant girlfriend you cannot just 'pray for them and the child' while they interrupt their lives and you enjoy being grandparents!
The references to God constantly is too much and not inclusive. This will teach me for not reading reviews enough!

Outdated views and examples
This book is really out of date referring to boys worrying about what the “opposite sex” might think, giving examples based on mothers being at home with children and fathers taking two weeks vacation from work. The starting advice regarding communication is to have a meal together and to start by conversing with God to thank him for the meal - which isn’t a belief that everyone holds. It talks about teenagers who are members of the church communicating with leaders but I’m not familiar with that many church going teenagers. Whilst I don’t think any of these are ‘bad’ examples in themselves, I believe that they do not represent a broad spectrum of society - statistics quoted are from 1998 - and does not really focus on the issues with teens in 2023. I am in the UK so appreciate there may be geographical differences but there are parts where I found myself wincing at the dated comments and beliefs. I had to turn off after Chapter 3.

Religious and homophobic
Really disappointed in this book. I have 4 children aged 20, 18, 13 and 12 years old. I’m only on chapter 3 and due to the negative tone used to describe same sex parents, bordering homophobic and the religious aspects I don’t think I will bother with the rest of the book. Completely lost any respect for the author. Waste of money!

I'm sure the content is reasonable but I couldn't get past the constant religious references and overtones.

Practical, relevant parenting help
I am so grateful for Dr. Chapman's books. About 15 years ago, my husband and I read the 5 Love Languages and saved our marriage. We read the Children's 5 love languages when our son was younger. Now that he is 13, I searched for the next book and found this one for teenagers.
I love that Dr. Chapman is so easy to listen to. He is funny. He is practical. He comes from a been-there perspective, not clinical or theoretical background. He uses many examples that make me laugh because I can relate so well.
As we raise our son, we are raising ourselves. So grateful to have Dr. Chapman on our side.
As a side note - yes, the principals shared work in both USA and Kiwi cultures, with a little tweaking for the latter.

Oh, man!
Exceptional, informative, and full of heart truths!
Foundational for understanding the needs of love, and specifically the love of teenagers. Helpful in both practical guidance and in concept- so your not just thinking, and your not just doing.
As a semi- young adult- reading(hearing) it actually caused waterworks in certain chapters- it explained the reason why I felt like I did very well- and explains an effective approach that would have melted my heart if utilized as a teen.
Highly recomend!
I hope you enjoy it as much as me!

Different people with different personalities express love in different ways. In fact, there are five very specific languages of love: Words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, quality time, and physical touch. Dr. Gary Chapman’s original best seller was first crafted with married couples in mind, but the love languages have proven themselves to be universal. The message of this audiobook is now tailored to meet the unique and real desires of single adults.
