Story
Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. To save humanity, they must fight.

When the people of Blackmoor Cove begin to ask about his combat role, Jack discovers his odd Hero Class and finds that parts of his game interface are riddled with exposed coding errors. She is proud of her job, though some in her clan whisper that it is meant to keep her out of the way because of the condition she was born with. Jaime, thoughtful and anxious, is an Angler, but he hates the sea. Worse, he’s been chosen for a duty that the clan hasn’t required for generations: to marry. But the joy of gaining a son was overshadowed by the newborn's terrible affliction. Eric was completely nulled-level zero and no characteristics points. Leveling up would be amazing...if it weren't so deadly. They injected me with a VR chip, a GPS tracker, and my first Seed. They gave me unbelievable powers. Then they sent me to fight. The monsters here are alien and vicious. There is a second moon in the sky. I watched a tree start moving and kill someone. And the other Players? They're even worse. I’m alone. I’m weak. And I’m scared. But I will cling to life by the tips of my bloody fingernails. Who is behind this twisted game? If I want to survive, I have to get stronger. But can I do it before the Game kills me?

Publisher's Summary
The population was growing too fast. Death by starvation was more common than murder or accident. Changes had to be made. An initial strategy to decrease the population was used, but the outcry against it was too massive to dismiss.
Thus, The 12 Mile Course was created.
In present day society, children between the ages of 12 to 16 are chosen randomly and thrown into an environment designed to kill all but the strongest. Those that live through the 12 separate challenges get to rejoin society. Those that don’t...don’t.
The course boasts a 36 percent success rate of a child finishing it alive. Chris, a boy on the cusp of turning 16, is about to find out just how effective the new system is at making sure only the strong survive.
Join Chris as he traverses through hostile territory in a landscape designed to bring about his likely demise. Less than half of those he’s traveling with are going to make it through alive, but if he’s lucky enough, he'll be able to beat the odds and go home to see his family, leaving everything he has to endure within the course behind.

Story reminds me of The Hunger Games , only so much better! Not a bunch of filler. Most of the kids actually work together to survive.

Narrator Ruins the Book
I've listened to hundreds of audio books. This is possibly the worst narration I've ever heard.
The story might be good, but I don't think I'm going to be able to listen to much more.
