Religion without God

Dowd's conclusions (insofar as they're decipherable) seem consistent with a desire to retain the engine of religion--what could broadly be called the existential urge--without having to invoke a God as the object of religious sentiment. Dowd's God is a personification of the universe as a whole and he views the universe as a living organism that is made conscious through the large mammalian brains of homo sapiens (as far as we know).

Unfortunately, Dowd does both religion and science a disservice. Religion without God is unintelligible and science with sentimentality is diluted. Dowd's narrative ends up being far too thick on sentimentality and much too thin on substance. Dowd doesn’t argue for his positions, he preaches them. As with any sermon, one either chooses to accept it or reject it. In this sense, Dowd is going to be much more palatable to the religious mindset than the scientific. Anyone looking for a religious version of Dawkins’ The Greatest Show on Earth should look elsewhere (James’ The Varieties of Religious Experience is a good alternate).

For those who have ears to hear, Dowd’s narrative is also quite condescending to positions he finds anachronistic and outdated. He reads the text well and his voice has an uplifting and friendly tone and cadence. But his message is clear: get up to speed or you will be culpable for the world’s problems. Dowd casts himself as a visionary who sees where things will end up and has a sort of friendly contempt for those who remain stuck on a pre-enlightened worldview (in both science and religion). Audio quality and production are top notch and Dowd as narrator is excellent.

Too Much of one and not enough other!

Would you consider the audio edition of Thank God for Evolution to be better than the print version?

I very much enjoyed the audio book. Mr. Dowd is obviously passionate about his subject and it showed in his writing and reading. I took much away from it and specifically his concept of integrity; I have been viewing my own life and actions from that perspective and it has been making a very positive difference in my life. My have only a few critiques. First, his understanding of God and Jesus, which I very much agree with, is so unlike the God and Jesus of the bible, that it seems he feels it is just an old myth that was appropriate for the time, but really doesn't hold much value today. He claims a number of times that he is down with scripture, but I didn't find many example of where he thinks the bible has deep underlying truths that are absolutely applicable to life today.

The second is that, although he gives a caveat that science is fallible and can be swayed by opinion, he then goes on to express, dare I say, a religious belief in "science". Scientific experiment that is cut and dry and provable beyond nearly any doubt (ie: the speed of light) are factual, but when you start calling Darwinian Evolution in its entirety "science", you start getting yourself in trouble. Like the Bible, Darwin wrote his "theory" when little information about genetics, never mind the extraordinary complexity of genetic structure, was even know. The religious fervor with which most scientist defend the theory of random mutation and natural selection as the causative elements of evolution of the species smacks of the same dogma shown by christian fundamentalists in defending the bible as literal. The challenge is that what is so often called "science" is not even close to science (see "Global Warmi"...I mean "Climate Change"). Real science, such as big bang theory, quantum theroy etc., can be viewed through a spiritual light and help get a deeper understanding of the fundamental nature of our world (God), the other outdated and junk science, can't be very helpful.

UNBELIEVABLY BAD!!

Michaels narration of the books is very good - but everything is unbelievably bad.
I persevered thought the first 3 chapters but I could not stand the agony of listening on.
The stupidity, incoherency and lack of scientific integrity in this book is hard to overstate.
Mr Dowd engaged in obscene forms of brain torture, he expects you to BELIEVE that:
 1) God exists and does not exists simultaneously.
 2) all religions in the world are true and not true at the same time
 3) Macro evolution is a scientific fact, even though it has NEVER been observed
and is shown to be fatally flawed by the scientific evidence.
 4) nothing exploded without a cause and created everything (the universe, me, you etc)
 5) Information self generates - even though it has never been observed

In short he wants you to abandon reason and logic and blindly believe his warped and unscientific world view.
Where 1 + 1 does not always equal 2.

His arguments are not dumb - they are nonsensical based on pure fantasy with only a veneer of scientific jargon.
He uses religious/Christian jargon and is a “Reverend” but this is all a deception.
He is both a Christian, Muslim and atheist at the same time.
His core ASSUMPTION that macro evolution is true and real flies clear in the face of recent scientific discoveries which clearly show that it is NOT plausible.
Consider just a small number of fundamental scientific problems with Darwinian/Macro evolution which expose its fallacy

1) Where did the information come from to build the DNA molecule?
- it contains over 4 Gigabits of programming data; we have never observed natural forces creating programming data
- a building is proof of a builder, a program is proof of a programmer, a design is proof of a designer
- See the book "Singnature in the Cell" by Stephen Meyer for detailed and compelling evidence

2) How did genders "evolve" from asexual organisms?
- Consider some of the challenges, have a look at this video http://youtu.be/Ab1VWQEnnwM

3) How do you explain symbiotic relationships while holding to gradual "evolution"?
- e.g.. The bees need the flowers, the flowers need the bees - they both MUST exist together, how could this occur slowly or gradually
- What came first the Chicken or the egg?

4) Where are all the myriad of transition fossils that Darwin predicted?
- They were missing then and they are missing now.
- How can the Cambrian explosion of millions of fully formed organism appearing abruptly be explained by Evolution?

5) Which "evolved" first, the vagina or the penis?
- how did one "evolve" from the other?
- How could the sexual function "evolve" both separately yet simultaneously?

The implication that most (if not all) scientists accept macroevolution is FALSE.
There is significant dissent in the scientific community as evidenced by the over 1000 scientists who have publicly expressed their Dissent From Darwinism. (https://dissentfromdarwin.org/)
These brave souls are brave enough to risk persecution by the evolution Nazis - there is something serious wrong with macro evolution

Dr John Sanford (Geneticist and inventor of the Gene Gun) said :
“The bottom line
is that the primary axiom [of Darwinian/Macro evolution]
is categorically false,
you can't create information with misspellings,
not even if you use natural selection.”

Thank God for Evolution

I thought this book was ambigous and lacked a clear premise or direction. The author was never clear on his theology or belief system. Throughout the book he tried explaining a belief in god as anagolous to worshiping the universe. This is not what a searcher for truth wants to hear. Can we at least get an absolute belief system. This book turned from a science/theology debate to a self help book, which was not indicitive by the title. If you are a beliver looking for evidence of God through science this is not the book for you. See Language of God or Whats so Great About Christianity.

Mind and heart opening!

I ordered this in book form soon after starting it. I listen to it on the road and read it and mark my paper copy. I took it to church Sunday and shared my thoughts on Facebook. My new favorite book! Narration is a little fast for me to be able to soak in. But, I found the slower speed setting and that helps. I will enjoy this for a long time! Much to consider!

Not a book for true Christians :(

As a born again Christian, I was curious to read a book in line with some unorthodox ideas that I hold about evolution. I believe that the story of Adam and Eve is not literal and meant to represent human evolution. That time in history when we developed the outermost layer of our brain which separated us from the animals and made us self aware.
But the author totally lost me when he said that you can be saved even if you don't believe that Jesus is literally God and when he said as long as you have "integrity" you are saved and that being "saved" only refers to being "saved" while you're here on earth and then he implies that there is no heaven :( -note to author-this is sooo dangerous and irresponsible. If you are not 100% sure of these statements, you should not be spreading them around. To say that there is no such thing as satin or real evil is also super dangerous. Satin likes to trick people into thinking that he doesn't exist. With all due respect sir, have you considered that maybe he DOES exist and he is using you to lull people into thinking that simply believing in the "universe" is enough to save their eternal souls. Just sayen :(
