Publisher's summary

A small-town doctor acquitted of murdering his pregnant wife faces new charges in this New York Times bestseller set in the early days of modern medicine.

Hambledon, Pennsylvania, is still reeling from the sensational murder trial that shattered the peace of the bucolic hamlet less than a year ago. Dr. Jonathan Ferrier was accused of killing his beautiful young wife after she died following a botched abortion. The scion of a powerful old eastern family, Jonathan hired the best attorneys money could buy. When he was acquitted, many believed he had bought his freedom. Now, he has returned home to sell his practice and move on. But haunted by his wife's death, Jonathan still strives to heal the judgmental people of his divided town.

Robert Morgan, a young, idealistic doctor, is determined to make up his own mind about the accused's innocence or guilt. Of one thing he is certain: Jonathan is a good doctor, perhaps even a great one. He is also a man who feels abandoned by God, his church, his family, and his friends. As Jonathan continues to be pilloried by the town, a new series of accusations are leveled at him. Is he a cold-blooded killer who murdered his wife and their unborn child? Or a man unjustly accused and wrongly maligned?

Testimony of Two Men explores the evolution of modern medicine and the tireless physicians who are its unsung heroes. Author Taylor Caldwell's bestselling novel touches on faith, religion, and the then-new field of mental health as it tells a mesmerizing tale of desire, betrayal, and love that can destroy or redeem.

testimony of two men

I absolutely love this book. I first read it over 30 years ago when I was in high school. The characters are well developed and I love Jonathan. When I first started listening to the performance I wasn't sure that I was going to like the reader but after the first couple of chapters I really did enjoy it. I have read this book myself probably somewhere between 5 and 10 times and I never tire of it. I would recommend this book.

Finally!

I have waited for this particular book to be made into audio for many years. The tale of an admirable, yet flawed, doctor at the turn of the 20th century, fighting to bring modern medical practices, fighting to provide justice, fighting to understand inhumanity has always been an inspiration. My own sister credited this story as her impetus to becoming a doctor herself. Written to reflect the style of its time, Taylor Caldwell masterfully creates vivid scenes with her incredible command of words and prose. Dr. Jon Ferrier’s story will stick with you long past its final words., and the narrator does a fine job adding depth to the characters. Though I would say some of his female voices could improve. In total, however, a wonderful experience.

SO GRATIFYING

Taylor Caldwell is the real deal. He kept me hooked for nearly 30 hours - and much of it due to the narration of George Newbern. Good old fashioned character development and story telling.

A doozy of a tale

Narrator, George Newbern, brings life to all the characters with his different voices and inflections. He made this long book enjoyable to listen to for over 29hours. Of course, Caldwell wrote a doozy with this tale. Enjoyed it immensely!

Marvelous story

While the book started out slow it was one of those long books that just grabbed you and sucked you in. I hated to see it end. Many of the tales and lessons are very applicable to life in today’s world

Testimony of Two Men, a terrific book!

I read this book years ago. I had forgotten most of it. I loved the history of medicine at the turn of the 20th century. The book is full of wonderful human characters, tragedies, love and hate. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of this long and involved story. I was moved to tears several times. I cheered for the good and was appalled by the bad. A great audible book.

worth the effort

Taylor Caldwell is so talented in her writing styles and historical accuracy. This is a very long book and justifies the time spent.

Classic

A true classic. Well performed and relevant. The evil that man does is eloquently displayed.

CW: attempted rape, implied incest, & endless misogyny

I thought I was getting used to the slow pace of this story and seeing where it was heading, only to be confronted with not only a violent attempted rape scene, but the positive reaction when the attacker immediately confesses to his own mother! There’s a line that essentially implies “Maybe now the girl will appreciate her own charms” as if the attempted rape was a compliment!

I understand this was written in an earlier time about an even earlier time than that, but I can’t fathom sitting through another 8+ hours of this cynical, preachy, misogyny-filled slog of a story. Long books are sometimes treasures, but this one is a painful, rambling journey. So disappointing.
