  • 000 - Introductions
    Aug 28 2017

This is a story of America in the late 19th Century—the Gilded Age. It’s a story of New York City before the automobile. It’s a story of robber barons, of industry, and of inventions that would change the world. And it’s the story of one man—one inventor—in particular: Nikola Tesla.

In this 000 episode, I'll introduce myself, my plans for the podcast, and just what you can expect from this on-going look at the life, inventions, and legacy of Nikola Tesla. And we'll do our best over the course of this series to separate the man and his incredible real life from the myths that have sprung up about him.

Nikola Tesla was born at the stroke of midnight between July 9 and 10, 1856. In this episode, we'll learn about Tesla's childhood years on the rural frontier of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and how early tragedy and a contentious relationship with his father would shape the rest of his life and give him the abilities he needed to make later breakthrough innovations in electricity.

This week, we’ll cover Tesla’s schooling from the time he first enrolled in primary school, right up until he heads off for engineering school in the late 1870s. It’s a major turning point in Tesla’s life, and it makes sense to break there until next time.

Five stars for contents and performance in this ongoing podcast. The author/writer/podcaster Stephen Kotowych has great voice performance that will not make you fall asleep. Despite my technical background and deep interest in science and engineering, I still find most Tesla books out there to be droning narratives and difficult to binge-listen to. Not this podcast.

I initially removed a star rating for distracting/unnecessary sound effects in early episodes because they were just too loud. But wait -- hang in there and please do not let this bother your ears. Kotowych made changes to latter episodes. He continues to use some sound effects but not jolting as before. He responds to feedbacks on Facebook and indicated he will remaster the earlier episodes to fix the problematic sounds.

I can see the potential of this podcast to become an audiobook and be one of the most digestible Tesla material for the general public to consume, especially for children interested in math and science.

I am thankful for the enormous amount of materials condensed into this podcast, the relevant current events during Tesla’s lifetime, the author's healthy dose of skepticism, his demythologizing & humanizing Tesla. Most of all, this podcast does not propagate conspiracy theories about Tesla or his achievements -- a relief in today's age of online misinformation/disinformation.

This is one of the greatest non-fiction addition to the Audible catalog recently.

A Most Compelling Tesla Biography!

While the first few episodes had some growing pains with sound, the content has been consistently excellent. I binged my way through this podcast and love it’s quality, details, and humor. There is so much information in this podcast but it has personal touches and details that help you see these historical figures as actual people with their own strengths and flaws. I frequently check for updates and am excited when they appear, even if they are far and few between.

Entertaining and Educational

The portions about Telsa were good. But the historical editorializing ruined it.
The reading and performance was good.

editorializing history was a bit much
