Publisher's summary

In the year 1899, women are expected to behave, but Tesla St. Vrain is no ordinary young woman. Hiding her psychic powers from the world, she wants nothing more than to lead an everyday Victorian life. But after a simple witchcraft ritual goes awry, she is bestowed with the magical power of quintessence and forced down a path of darkness.

Determined to use her newfound powers to protect the Earth from the sleeping horrors and terrors long forgotten by humanity, she joins a secret organization, the Ministry of Psychical Defense, taking up an ancient quest to secure the evil sources of darkness, the Spheres of Nether. But can she come to terms with her powers and complete her training before the Spheres fall into the wrong hands?

Engaging if overwhelming with “magical” sources

This book was fun to listen to- but there were so many sources of magic that seemed unrelated I doubt it would hold up to critical evaluation. It felt like “The Mummy” combined with Harry Potter. As hard to accept as the story was, the narrator made it feel believable as I listened. I think that as author hones his “world”, the stories in the series will only get better. Also I liked the length of this book- not maybe as much bang for my buck as some- but a good story in a reasonable amount of time. Kudos to the narrator for bringing it to life.

Well worth it...can't wait for the remaining books

Great mix of magic, steam punk, myth, and paranormal. Don't let yourself get hung up on timeliness, magic origins, or mythology and just enjoy the imaginative mix of it all. Great fiction is about creating your own origins, legends, and inventions and making them believable for the storyline.
Cody Polston has done just that in this enthralling mash up of beliefs, mythology, religion, and technology.
Can't wait until the next two books are available on Audible.
