An endearing adventure of the Arnold Pent family who followed an unconventional path as what some have called "the first modern home school family". In the early 1950s, Arnold Pent, Jr., and his wife Persis took their eight children out of public schools and began a million mile journey throughout the US and Canada together. Along the way, they presented their gospel message in churches, schools, and wherever they had opportunity.

Central to the family's daily practice was in-depth Bible reading, study, and memorization. Their public programs featured music, preaching, scripture recitation, and always encouraged families to read the Bible together. The book was written by Arnold Pent III, the third child, who compiled it when he was 21 from his journals written as a teenager. A great story for those interested in home education, family discipleship, and evangelism.

A Story You Won’t Soon Forget

Such a great story. A story about family, faith, traveling, and of course, the Bible! What an impression; a family that reads the Bible together three times every day (not including each family member’s personal 30 to 60-minute devotional time), and travels around the country as a family of 10. This story is written and read by the second son (third child) and is full of adventures and impossibilities. “What man says is not nearly as important as what God says.”

Excellent Story For the Whole Family

Well written and well narrated story of a family doing the Lord's work as they see fit to do it. It is very entertaining with all of their mis adventures and car troubles with the family split in more than one vehicle with some of the teenagers in charge of one. It talks about their day to day life, prayer and bible reading routines and even the meal prep and nutrition recommendations. It is great and I could not stop listening. One of the best audio books I have found.

If you ate expecting the recordings of the Pent family singing and quoting scripture, it is not on this recording. The story is very encouraging, and good for the WHOLE family to listen too👍😁

Such an inspiring story

Our entire family, including children as young as 7 years old, loved listening to this story. The descriptions of their experiences brought a lot of conviction, laughter and many good conversations between us all. It helps us to continue in our journey of making Bible reading our consistent and constant part of each day, and reaching others with the gospel message. We will be reading/listening to this book many times again, I’m sure. We highly recommend this book to everyone!

Enjoyable and informative!

This book reaffirms my faith in God. I admire the Pence family, especially the parents who so diligently taught their children such wonderful life lessons. I am going to read it again or listen to it again because I know I'll learn even more the second time. I wish there were more books like this on Audible.

narrator quality

I am more accustomed to a professional type of reader. However, as this was read by the author, I do enjoy hearing the account from his own mouth. I read this many years ago, when my children were still home. Though I believed in the principles/habits given in this book, I am ashamed to say that I did not implement them as I intended to do. I very much regret this. Something recently reminded me if this book, so sought it out and re-read it. I enjoyed it just as much this time.
