Publisher's summary

When Sarah Grayson opened a secondhand shop in the quaint town of North Harbor, Maine, she was expecting peace and quiet. Then she was adopted by a rescue cat named Elvis and a kooky trio of senior sleuths known as Charlotte's Angels. Now she has nine lives' worth of excitement...

Sarah's friend and employee Rose is delivering a customer's purchase when the quick errand becomes a deadly escapade. Rose arrives just in time to see the customer murdered by his wife, but before she can call the police, she is knocked out cold. When she wakes up, no one believes her, especially after the woman claims her husband is very much alive and has left her for someone else - and has a text message and empty bank account to prove it.

Despite her convincing story, Sarah is sure something is fishy - and it's not Elvis's kitty treats. Sarah, Elvis, and the Angels are determined to unravel this mysterious yarn, before the feral killer pounces again...

The Audio Version

Although listening is not my favorite way to enjoy reading a book except when I'm traveling, it worked well with this story. Fun story and well read.

A Tangled Web of lies

Telling Tails is another great Second Chance Cat Mystery. Rose Jackson decides to make a delivery by herself and witnesses what she thinks is the aftermath of a murder. She says she saw the body of Jeff Cameron, a customer of the shop, being dragged by his wife just before she is knocked out whilst standing on the steps watching the scene. She is found down the road from the house, disoriented and unsteady. Sarah and the gang rally to her side at hospital and Rose is none too happy with any of them when she is doubted. The thing is, no one can prove she didn't see it, and no one can prove she did see it. To add insult to injury, the doctor say she may have had a small stroke. It causes friction between Sarah and Nick; but when Sarah finds what looks like a needle mark on Rose's neck Nick agrees to take a blood sample to run for possible drugs. The Angels are on the case looking for reasons Jeff Cameron to possibly be murdered, especially by his wife, the possibility of him cleaning out the couple's bank accounts and running away with a lover, and who may have assaulted Rose for looking into the house. The gang uses all their resources and then some to find the answers. And Elvis uses his unique talent to guide the Angels and Sarah.

A favorite and ready for the sequel

I love this series and get impatient waiting for the next book to come. The characters are interesting and engaging. I especially like Elvis, the cat, and how he relates to the world.

Ms Ryan does a good job of spinning a tale that keeps my attention and makes me laugh. This story moved well. I think I did figure it out before the reveal, but was curious about how the plot would develop. The wrap up was a bit clumsy. I won't go into details to avoid a spoil, but the pieces didn't all quite fit for me. That said, I enjoyed the book. The narration was excellent. The reader truly brings the characters to life.

Elvis Lives

Although I am not really a cat person, I do enjoy the character of Elvis the cat in this low key mystery series. I also like Sarah, the main character; she is caring, smart, and hard-working, starting her own unique business after loosing a job. Sarah does not moan, whine or pathetically wait for a man to take care of her.

However, the most engaging and entertaining characters are the group of senior citizen detectives who call themselves Charlie's Angels. While not totally realistic, it is a pleasant change when older folks are portrayed as smart, funny and vital. Think Golden Girls meet Jessica Fletcher.

The setting of small town North Harbor Maine is surprisingly accurate; not perfect but definitely a place you would want to visit if not live. The re-purpose shop Second Chance is so typically New England (recycling has been mandated since the 1970s), where throwing away any usable item is taboo.
