Publisher's summary

In this third book in the New York Times best-selling Dorothy Must Die series, new girl from Kansas Amy Gumm is caught between her home - and Oz.

My name is Amy Gumm. Tornadoes must have a thing about girls from Kansas, because - just like Dorothy - I got swept away on one, too. I landed in Oz, where Good is Wicked, Wicked is Good, and the Wicked Witches clued me in to my true calling: assassin.

The way to stop Dorothy from destroying Oz - and Kansas - is to kill her. And I'm the only one who can do it.

But I failed. Others died for my mistakes. Because of me, the portal between the worlds has been opened. And if I don't find a way to close it?

Dorothy will make sure I never get to go home again.

Now it's up to me to join the Witches, fight for Oz, save Kansas, and stop Dorothy once and for all.

Not the end

This book took a few surprising turns. The most surprising is that it isn't the end of the series. I had thought this would be the last book and was hoping for a satisfying end to the story which I did not get. It's very clear that there will be a sequel. The story is a little more action packed than the last so it felt short to me. I am actually very disappointed that the story isn't over. I know that there are a lot of original Oz books for the author to use as a foundation for a longer story. I feel she should have completely resolved this arc before dragging Amy off to a new adventure or that she could have tied it in better. There are a lot of authors that say they always know how their series would end before they even began writing. I honestly didn't get that feeling from this book, the whole thing feels a little lost. Overall I think I will just wait till the series is completely over before I continue reading. I also feel like her editors should have caught her over use of the phrase "She didn't have to tell me twice" and it's many variations. The narrator did a decent job.

A bit too gory and sadistic for young adult

I really like the overall storyline and the premise. I think there are a lot of very interesting characters that the author does not give enough detail to. I think there is way too much time spent on the gory details of the non-stop battles. This book was a little bit sadistic and twisted and a few times I almost gave up reading it because it was just a necessarily over-the-top. the author describes some very gruesome fight scenes and when you think about the main character being 16 it's pretty messed up. I would have rather got any more personality out of other characters or more history on Oz .

meh

Too much descriptive fluff that lost my attention often. Not enough actual scheming, plotting, or action.

Rambling road to nowhere

The whole story line barely moves forward, with this book being more of a side trip back to Kansas, so Amy can reconnect with her mom and her high school nemesis, because why? Then a brand new villain, mentioned for the first time at the end of the last book, appears sporadically in this one. and his motivation is? And characters randomly die, resurrect, reveal new powers, turn good-evil-good-? It feels like the author is just spitballing plots, or rather, hawking up hairballed messes and presenting them to the listener as if they’re meaningful stories.

The only consistent plot is that Dorothy Must Die… and it’s nothing more than a cruel tease, like Lucy yanking the football from Charlie Brown. How many time does Amy confront Dorothy, only to not try to kill her? Just finish already! At this point, the cool imagery and vampy narration can no longer make-up for this hot mess of a story. Book 4 gets marginally better, but the ruby shine of book 1 faded to a dull luster and the rest are barely sale worthy.

Okay dragging

The story is dragging at this point.
I feel like this series could be 3 books and the 2nd and 3rd book could have been 1 with a lot taking out between the 2.
Also I hate it when there is a death but oh wait not really... 😒 really? I enjoyed the 1st book so much so I’m really hoping

Vivid and imaginative storytelling.

The great and thoughtful use of language and vocabulary by Paige paints vivid, exciting, and colorful mental imagery for the reader. Paige did a wonderful job of producing a tale just edgy enough to balance out the campy, and fantastical characters and scenery.
