Publisher's summary

After 17-year-old Felicita’s dearest friend Ilven kills herself to escape an arranged marriage, Felicita chooses freedom over privilege. She fakes her own death and leaves her sheltered life as one of Pelimburg’s magical elite behind. Living in the slums, scrubbing dishes for a living, she falls for charismatic Dash while also becoming fascinated with the vampire Jannik. Then something shocking washes up on the beach: Ilven's death has called out of the sea a dangerous wild magic. Felicita must decide whether her loyalties lie with the family she abandoned....or with those who would twist this dark power to destroy Pelimburg's caste system, and the whole city along with it.

Fabulous

What made the experience of listening to When the Sea Is Rising Red the most enjoyable?

This is an amazing fantasy novel. I love the story. The main character Felicita is so complex and we see her grow as she realizes what life is like for the lower class throughout the book. The descriptions are lovely and the writing is superb, and Gemma Dawson is a great narrator. Fans of Kristin Cashore will love this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of When the Sea Is Rising Red?

I love the moment when Felicita first meets Jannik.

What does Gemma Dawson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love her voice. I definitely feel like she sounds the way Felicita should--though I never would have thought of that without her.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, when Felicita uses her magic, and I can't say any more about it than that!

Dark and Magical. Great Narration!

Would you listen to When the Sea Is Rising Red again? Why?

Yes! It was a beautifully imaginative but dark fantasy with interesting and atypical characters. It is a magical coming of age story told through the eyes of Felicita, who I loved because she is not your typical heroine, which I found refreshing. She was realistic, conflicted and at times selfish in the way she adapted to the new world she escapes to.

What was one of the most memorable moments of When the Sea Is Rising Red?

The dark and sinister landscape of the city of Pelimburg was described very well in great and imaginative detail. I enjoyed the relationship/love triangle between Felicita, Dash and vampire Jannick: Her conflict between her old and new world. I loved the magical element and the climax at the end.

What about Gemma Dawson’s performance did you like?

Gemma was wonderful! She really captured the mood of the dark landscape and story. She defined and embodied the many varied characters incredibly well- subtly yet effectively bringing them to life. I will definitely seek out more of her performances.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The loss she experiences of her best friend was emotionally stirring. Her relationship with her mother, realistic but very sad.
