Publisher's Summary

St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school - it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's - the very place where they're most in danger.

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful, lest the Strigoi - the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires - make Lissa one of them forever.

The accents were very distracting and unnecessary. The music in the beginning and the end also distracted from the story. Narrators voice is also quite annoying.

    "Love this series :)"

What I Loved: This is one of the rare YA novels where neither of the lead characters got on my nerves, in fact they were both appealing and engaging. Their relationships with each other (best friends) and others were well written and fun to read. They were teenagers, they did some very "teenage" like things, but they were not annoying. The pacing of the story was fantastic and kept me interested until the very end.

What I Liked: I really enjoyed the twist on the vampiric lore and how it works in this society. The secondary characters were well rounded and served to work the storyline further. The plot was well though out and didn't leave that "where are they going with this" feeling.

What was "Sorta OK": The only complaint was at very the beginning it felt like "jumping" into a story already progress. It took awhile before I felt "caught up".

Why it got a 4: The book is very enjoyable to read: fast paced, quick, engaging, and funny (at times). I would recommend this to older YA readers (PG13 type of rating) and any adult who enjoys PNR. Overall, just a book to not miss!

What did you love best about Vampire Academy?

I read it when I was in High School and felt a lot of the characters were relatable. I loved the writing style and the plot was well developed. I was just entertained the whole way through.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lyssa, I relate to her struggles.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I wasn't a big fan of the narrator. Her female voices were just ok and her male ones were pretty bad. Dmitri's was ok for an accent but the rest of the boys had stuffed nose sounding tones and it they didn't really sound different from each other.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    No spoilers!

    "My Favorite YA Series!"

I absolutely love this series! Vampire Academy is not your typical vampire fare. Richelle Mead created a fascinating world with two types of vampires, the Moroi and the Strigoi, and a human/vampire mix called a Dhampir. Rose is a Dhampir, a guardian in training at St. Vladimir's Academy. She and her best friend Lissa, a Moroi princess, fled the school two years ago, and when the book begins they are discovered and taken back to the academy. Someone or something is threatening Lissa, and Rose is determined to protect her no matter what.

There are so many reasons to love this book. The modern academy with a caste system and teen drama is energized by the addition of vampires. Rose and Lissa's friendship is so strong and they're both determined to protect the other. It's refreshing to read a YA book with a solid foundation in friendship. Rose herself is bold and brash, and kicks major butt. Yes, she's cocky and a bit vulgar, but she uses those talents for good instead of evil. She's also determined and focused when it counts. You can't help but respect her work ethic.

The relationship aspect was a slow burn, the mutual friendship and respect developed at the perfect pace. So many YA books rely on instalove and immediate physical attraction, but the relationship here is so surprising and it works well. The first book in the series just dips its toe in the vampire world, and the other books dive deep.

The narrator had a pleasant speaking voice for the story, and I liked her voice for Rose. Unfortunately the speaking voices for Lissa, Mia, Stan, and Dimitri really detracted from the story. I would rather not have speaking voices at all than a forced Russian accent and high pitched girly voices. But I will definitely power through the narration for the story, it's one I highly recommend!

    "not bad"

I really had low expectations for this book, mostly because every one I've read lately has been sub-par. But this book managed to hold my interest through out, I didn't get annoyed with the reader, and it was mature enough to where I didnt feel like I was reading something written for a kid.

    "Loved the narrator!"
If you could sum up Vampire Academy in three words, what would they be?

    Intoxicating, romantic, forbidden

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was so much more exciting than I was expecting!

Which character – as performed by Stephanie Wolf – was your favorite?

Definitely the main character, but all of the voices were great and unique!

    Any additional comments?

I own physical copies of the rest of the series, but I might just have to listen to the audiobooks if they have the same narrator!

    "Enjoyable book, so-so performance"

I selected the book after having enjoyed the film and enjoyed it - surprised to find the film adaptation was fairly faithful to the book it was based on (that's rarely the case!). Right now I'm going to go look and see if the next book has the same narrator, as it was not always enjoyable listening to the narrator's voice and questionable Russian accent. She was impressively consistent and admirably varied in the voices she created for characters, but overall her high pitch and youthful delivery were distracting. I realize the book is aimed at teenagers and certainly the material isn't sophisticated? But I think any material can benefit from a strong narrator and teenagers don't enjoy sophomoric narration any more than adults do. To other listeners I suggest hesitation only if, like me, you are particular about your narrator. The story itself is an interesting take on vampires, a light listen, and a good bit of escapism.

I couldn't even finish the book it was so bad.
The story line was boring and the narrator made all the characters sound clueless. I like when I get lost in a book. I didn't get lost in this book.

    "Definately better than expected!"

I am an avid reader / audiobook listener. I love mystical books with vampires and etc. I have just got to the end of the audio House of Night series : ( which I wasn't happy about.. I love that series! I thought I'd give this a go, although it didn't look as appealing. However, I stand corrected. It is just as good, if you like the House of Night, Vampire Diaries, Twilight Saga and etc I reckon you'll love these too!

"Great introduction to Vampire Accademy Series"

Don't be fooled by thinking this is just another vampire/human teenage angst series. It isn't. Basically there are three types of vampire, one that was born a vampire, one that is half vampire/half human and one that is created a vampire. This series is about the survival of the fittest and the half vampire/human students learning how to guard the safety of the pure vampires they are assigned to. Protecting them from their nemesis, the created vampires. This story enticed me from the beginning and although the heroine, Rose, is a nasty, whiny, spoiled brat, as the story develops, I grew to like her and believe that her main purpose is to protect her best friend and pure vampire, Lissa. That is of course, until she falls for another half vampire/half human who is forbidden and struggles with her own emotions whilst protecting lissa. Great first book and eager to crack on with the next installment.

    "Brilliant"

I've previously read the Vampire Academy books, and the spin-off series, Bloodlines, and I love them! To me, they're the best vampire series of books.

I wasn't sure how much the audiobook would give or take away from my imagination, especially as I've found some audiobooks to be quite boringly read. But I was really happy with this one - including the accents put on for Dimitri and some of the other characters.

I've just downloaded Frost Bite, the second in the series, so will soon be starting on that one!

    "Vampires and Dhampirs"

A book that is suitable for teens and adults. Dhampir Rose is a Guardian and watches over her close friend Lissa to whom she has a special bond. Lissa is a Moroi, a vampire blue blood (good guy) and also one of the last of her genetic lineage. The Strigoi (bad vampires) whole purpose in life is to attack he Moroi, wgich is why they need the protection of the Dhampir Guardians. Sound complicated? Well it isn't, in fact it is a great read and Richelle Mead has created a fantastic YA series. I highly recommend this author and book
