Publisher's Summary

I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, she doesn't realize that paranormal forces are responsible - not until mysterious identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into her room and destroy a deadly spirit sent to kill her.

Kennedy learns that her mother's death was no accident, and now she has to take her place in the Legion of the Black Dove - a secret society whose five members were all murdered on the same night, leaving the Legion in the hands of the next generation: a misfit group with unique skills.

As the new members race to find the only weapon capable of destroying the demon, they use their individual talents to battle paranormal entities and earn their rightful place in the Legion - except for Kennedy. If she is truly the missing piece of the puzzle, can she stay alive long enough to find out - without losing her heart in the process?

Protect Yourself. What you can't see CAN hurt you.

Enjoyed it

So, I wouldn't say that this book is anything very original, but I still enjoyed it. I have re-listened to it quite a few times. You can definitely tell the author is a big fan of the show Supernatural and that it inspired this book.

Overall though, I really liked the characters, the story was interesting to me (I love ghost stuff) and although some parts were predictable there was still plenty that kept me guessing.

I did not care too much for Candice Accola as the narrator. I've liked her acting wise in things I have seen her in, but I felt she was very dull as a narrator.

The 2nd book was really good, actually much better than the first, and I am hoping the 3rd book will be coming out eventually because it was left on such a cliff hanger!

Worst Narrator Ever

What was most disappointing about Kami Garcia’s story?

Garcia tried to take all the tenants of recent YA - triangular love story, lack of parents, group of young people fighting a cause - and put them in a ghost story that is not particularly interesting. The love story falls flat and the ghost hunting just seems dumb. Many other better options out there.

What didn’t you like about Candice Accola’s performance?

This narrator seems not to know how to read the English language. She pauses in the middle of sentences and paragraphs where there are no periods or commas, creating a confusing story to follow. She reads extremely slowly, but changing the speed to 1.25 just makes the story sound weird. If I didn't have to read this book for work, I would never have made it through the story. I will never listen to another one of her books again.

Ghostbusters meets YA

Would you consider the audio edition of Unbreakable to be better than the print version?

Eh, it's 6 one way, 1/2 a dozen the other.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kennedy. She was a typical character for a YA book but I really liked her.

What three words best describe Candice Accola’s performance?

Good, okay, fine.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

If I had to describe the book in one word that word would be Ghostbusters.
It was a good start to the series for sure. Not great, but still very good and entertaining. For being YA it was good. If you’re an adult looking for a paranormal story you should keep looking. This is definitely YA paranormal. Nothing scary about it. But I’m a sucker for YA books so I really enjoyed this one and am looking forward to the remainder of the series.
