Critic reviews

"Actress Trini Alvarado gives a performance consistent with her previous narrations in this series. She projects a youthful, but strong character for Alanna; this is her outstanding strength." (School Library Journal)

My childhood

They were my childhood. I reread them often. My kids will read too because they have such good messages.

Made it through

This has always been my least favorite book in the song of the lioness. It's still good, but it just drags a little for me. Listening to it on audio really helped me get through it with enjoyment.

George and Alanna (Spoilers included)

I really enjoyed the beginning and middle of this novel but the ending was a little disappointing. Having Duke Roger come back again. Her brother Thom dying was heartbreaking. I really wanted him to live and grow to be a great wizard. Alanna and George's relationship is just adorable. He really saw her all together instead of just loving parts of her. He knew she needed freedom to live unlike her other suitors.

Excellent choice ... Good continuation of Saga

Where does The Woman Who Rides Like a Man rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is simply another great book by Tamora Pierce. She knows what readers want. A fun, exciting, involving story. As with the other two in the series, it touches on issues of growing up, various emotions and making wise choices that are handled outstandingly also making it excellent for all ages.

It is written in such a way that you could start with this series, written after Lady Knight. Since this is filling in the back-story of characters in those books you would not miss a thing or be lost in any way. In fact, it could be argued as a good place to start, since you would then understand more going into the other series.

My only criticism, and it is NOT about the stories themselves, but the naming of the books. It is difficult sometimes to make sure you are starting with the first book in a series without some hunting around. Audible needs to better describe which book is which in a series.

What did you like best about this story?

The story flows well and has enough of everything to keep the whole family interested and at all age levels. You have Love, Action & Adventure, Romance, Exciting fight scenes, Magic and plenty of Humour throughout.

Have you listened to any of Trini Alvarado’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The reader Trini Alvarado is again outstanding in her performance in this series. Between the writing and the performance you swear you are listening to your own daughter talking sometimes.

Any additional comments?

Our family... parents, boys and girls rank this as a must read and guaranteed fun and enjoyment for everyone.

Confusingly enjoyable AND Predictable!

Good story in the quartet. One thing Ms. Pierce impress' me with is the fact that none of the four novels were "filler" books. Each is a story in itself.

The series is good. I was addicted to listening, chiefly because of the narrator Trini Alvarado. Its her performance that should get 5 stars.

It's much more elementary, compared to the slightly more sophisticated plottings og the tricksters series. Not bad Ms. Pierce but bring back Alianna and the Raka (tricksters).!!!!!!
