Publisher's summary

Armed only with a frying pan and her common sense, Tiffany Aching, a young witch-to-be, is all that stands between the monsters of Fairyland and the warm, green Chalk country that is her home. Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle, aka the Wee Free Men, a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny. Together, they battle through an eerie and ever-shifting landscape, fighting brutal flying fairies, dream-spinning dromes, and grimhounds (black dogs with eyes of fire and teeth of razors) before ultimately confronting the Queen of the Elves, absolute ruler of a world in which reality intertwines with nightmare. And in the final showdown, Tiffany must face her cruel power alone.

In a riveting narrative equal parts suspense and humor, Carnegie Medalist Terry Pratchett returns to his internationally popular Discworld with a breath-taking tale certain to leave fans, new and old, enthralled.

Critic reviews

"Briggs reads the prose with rhythmic glee and suspenseful understanding....This tale is especially recommended for all girls who wonder why boy characters like Harry Potter seem to get all the magical action." (AudioFile)
"The book is full of witty dialogue and a wacky cast of characters....A funny and thought-provoking fantasy, with powerfully visual scenes and characters that remain with readers. A glorious read." (School Library Journal)

First Sight and Second Thoughts

My 9-year old daughter and I listen to audiobooks any time we have a drive longer than 15 minutes and this has been one of our favorites. I find myself chuckling just thinking about Rob Anybody and Not-so-big-as-medium-sized-Jock-but-bigger-than-wee-Jock Jock and their escapades. Humor aside, I love the message that looking at things and thinking them through is more important than being able to do magic. We should all have First Sight and Second Thoughts. Especially since they generally help Tiffany sort things out for herself before the Nac Mac Feegle arrive back on the scene from whatever carousing has distracted them from the crisis at hand.

One of Terry's Best

I have been listening to Terry Pratchett's books while commuting for a couple of years, and this is one of the best. Tiffany, the nine-year-old witch, and the Nac Mac Feegle are hilarious and serious at the same time, and the sense of place, the "Land under Wave" that plays a huge part in the book is wonderfully invoked. I laughed often and loved Terry's reworking of some very traditional fantasy themes as seen through his particular set of cracked lenses. I would recommend this both to adults and older children, particularly girls who need some heros of their own, and especially to the parents of those girls. Just a great read.

Not just for kids

This is an absolutely delightful book which the whole family can listen to. Although it is couched as a "kids" book- I recommend it to the adults too. It is nice to have an action oriented book with the main character being a girl. The characters are well developed, the narrator is terrific, and the story holds your interest the entire way through. There are some really funny moments in the book (especially involving the cat and the wee men)! I heartily recommend the book whether your 8 or 50+!

Audio is only an improvement

I confess to having already read this book in hardback form. However, I wanted to see how the text would come off in audio with all the English accents--and Nac Mac Feegle accents, too. I was not disappointed.

While reading the actual text was a delight, listening to Stephen Briggs' oral rendition makes the text even more fun. I'll have to purchase the next two in audio, as well.

Huzzah for the Wee Frees!

I love the Wee Free Men, so a book about them was a treat indeed. Pratchett's new character, Tiffany is wonderful, perhaps a little older than her purported nine years, but a delightful character all the same. Give yourself a treat and get this audiobook!

A Classic

The header for this book says it's Book 2, and I guess there is some other Terry Pratchett children's book out there, but this is Book 1 of the Tiffany Aching series. Start here.

I listen to this book at least once a year and laugh out loud every time. I've read some of Terry Pratchett's books for adults, but am usually left feeling that something's missing. There's a distance between reader and characters that comes from too many puns and winks to the audience. This book avoids that. The writing is funny yet grounded in Tiffany's world. I love Tiffany. She questions the status quo and finds things out for herself. All of her books are enjoyable, but Wee Free Men is my favorite.

Stephen Briggs does an amazing job with the narration. He sounds like he's having a lot of fun and just lets loose with voices and sounds. His accents are perfectly tailored for each off-the-wall character.

A fabulous book for children and adults. The narration makes an already fun book that much better. One of my favorite audiobooks ever.

Crivens!

Great book! I'm listening it to it for the second time already. The Nac Mac Feegle are great fun and the reader has done a great job of bringing them to life. It's one of our favorite Terry Pratchett books.

Required Reading

I originally purchased this book for my 7-year-old daughter, but ended up sneaking the player away from her in the mornings so I could listen to it on my commute. Whatever the Gold Standard is in Kid Lit, this book exceeds it: hugely entertaining, totally original, and with a powerful message about opening your eyes to the world. (My daughter has already started talking about first and second thoughts!) It’s definitely going to be required reading for my other kids… and it won’t be a hard job at all to convince them to pick this one up…. The narration is also very good…. Now I’m off to download the sequel...we're both eager to find out what happens next.

Laugh out loud

I have been an adult for a long time and find this young adult/children's series very enjoyable. The plots are light but entertaining that the humor is laugh out loud funny. Not sugary sweet but not bleak either. The NacMacFleegals and Wee Big Hag make easy listening.
