Nostalgic Adventure

This was one of my favorite books when I was 13. I was so excited to dive in and listen. I found the narrator a little dry at first, but as I kept listening, her reading of it suited the story. Having an older narrator reading in first person made me want a sequel so badly! I highly recommend revisiting this classic. I heard there were rumors of Devito directing, but that was 7 years ago. It feels like Treasure Island, but with a female protagonist.

Irritating Narration

I loved this book growing up and thought it would be fun to revisit it. The story is interesting and well-done, as far as YA novels go, especially when compared to how many these days focus on romance. My problem is with the narrator. She has a lilt to her sentences, especially when trying to give each character a unique voice (and failing to do so) that grates on the ears. It's almost as though she's trying to ask a question. If this weren't such a short book, and one I was already familiar with, I probably wouldn't have finished it based on the narration alone.

We loved it!!

We loved listening to this in our 5th grade classroom!!It really saves a teacher's voice when the books are on audibles.

Returning it

What made the experience of listening to The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle the most enjoyable?

The storyline seems good and I believe it would be an enjoyable read.

What didn’t you like about Alexandra O’Karma’s performance?

The narrator. She seemed to be short of breath while reading. I just couldn't get past it.

Great hear!

This was a good book to listen with my teenage daughter. She started as uninterested and ended up learning a lot about a sailor's life and enjoying to the end.

50/50

The story itself was really good! It has a lot a twists and I always found myself wanting to continue reading! The one thing that I did not like was the audio. I would keep hearing the reader breathing and swallowing. In addition to that, during the beginning half of the book the reader kept taking loud breaths of air in between every 2-3 word, however this became less noticeable towards the end of the reading. I give the story a 4/5 and the performance 3/5 since the reader did do a good job at showing emotion and changing characters voices!

Newberry Honor Book for a reason...

I read this Newberry Honor book aloud to my kids when they were pre-teens, enjoyed its exciting clipper ship setting then and enjoyed it again now. Although I had to suspend my disbelief a few times as the plot becomes ever more complicated... I found I was glad to do it. To me the narration was pretty good considering the variety of voices involved in the book and I honestly didn't notice loud inhaling. Heroine does a 180 degree change in beliefs, behavior, capability and self esteem which depending on your view may be good or bad. It made for some good thought questions and processing with my kids. Would be a fun family listen for cross country trip.
