Publisher's summary

She's just a New York City girl living with her artist mom...

News flash: Dad is prince of Genovia. (So that's why a limo always meets her at the airport!)

Downer: Dad can't have any more kids. (So no heir to the throne.)

Shock of the century: Like it or not, Mia is prime princess material.

The worst part: Princess lessons from her dreaded grandmere, the dowager princess of Genovia, who thinks Mia has a thing or two to learn before she steps up to the throne.

Well, her father can lecture her until he's royal-blue in the face about her princessly duty, no way is she moving to Genovia and leaving Manhattan behind. But what's a girl to do when her name is PRINCESS AMELIA MIGNONETTE GRIMALDI THERMOPOLIS RENALDO?

Does not belong in the 7 and under catagory!

I bought this for my daughters (4 and 6). Luckily they lost interest before the discussion of the conditions that would have to be met before she lost her virginity. The book is more interesting than the movie, but not as inocent.

Amazing!!!!!

This is an amazing book. Do not be fooled by the movie this is WAY better!!! It may have a sappy tital and a pinkish aperance but it is an amazing book that any non-girly-girl will LOVE!!! As for all the reviews about it is a bad book for young girls, I think its just fine. Im 11 and loved it, but I guess you shouldnt let a 7-year old listen to it. Overall, AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

excrellent narration

First, get all three books! They tie together seamlessly.
Very funny.
Ann Hathaway's reading is superb. She puts you right into the character and her situations. She is able to change her voice to the point that it seems there are at least 3 different readers..
The only down side to the books is the poor girl's obsessions with her figure (or lack of one), and "French kissing". Despite these negatives, I rate this as excellent family listening. Even our 12 year-old son was hoping there would be more books in this series.

My wife adds that even after having seen the movie first it made the book even more enjoyable because the casting of the movie was not that far off for each of the characters except for Gran mere. We will definitely be listening to this book many more times.

Anne Hathaway should narrate every book!

A great (and quick!) read. Mia's obliviousness is not over the top and adds amusement to an already fun and entertaining story. After listening- I now believe that Anne Hathaway should narrate every female-lead story from here until audio books end. The best I've heard in a long time!

A little cheese with that whine?

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter because we liked the movie so much. I'm glad I listened to it first. I suppose the whining of the main character would be fine for a young reader, but the references to testicle cancer, mother having a man sleep over, french kissing, and loss of virginity are not. This one will not make it to her ipod.

Amazing!!!

This book is amazing! Although definitely not very child friendly. Although would not recommend for a younger audience.

Laugh out loud

Setting: contemporary NY, NY
Genre: YA situation comedy
I enjoyed this book about a too-thin, too-tall, flat-chested 14 year old girl trying to adjust to high school, along with her smart, bossy best friend Lily. Her mother has given her a diary through which the entire story is told. She details her issues of liking the popular boy, being talked down to by his snotty cheerleader girlfriend, and dealing with the difficulties of algebra. Then her life gets really challenging when she learns that she is actually the heir to the throne of a tiny European principality.
I really liked the protagonist, Mia. Other characters were interesting as well, though I wouldn't say any of them were particularly well-developed. Of course, this is the first of a series, so they will likely be fleshed out in succeeding books.
What I didn't like about the book is the poor role-model Mia makes for girls. Am I being too much of a feminist when I cringe at her problems with math and how it takes a boy to help her understand? Or that her algebra teacher bumps her grade up to a D because he is dating her mom? I totally understand the adolescent angst of dealing with social anxiety, coupled with the horrors of finding out that she has to learn to dress and act like a princess. What I don't understand is why Ms Cabot felt the need to go stereotypical with girls and math. It would have been just as funny, if not more so, had her school difficulties been in geography. At any rate, aside from that issue, this was a fun listen that provided lots of laughs, and Anne Hathaway's performance was excellent.
