Publisher's summary

The best-selling epic continues!

Hal and his brotherband crew are hot on the trail of the pirate Zavac and they have one thing only on their minds: Stopping the bloodthirsty thief before he can do more damage. Of course, they also know Zavac has the Andomal, the priceless Skandian artifact stolen when the brotherband let down their guard. The chase leads down mighty rivers, terrifying rapids, to the lawless fortress of Ragusa. If Hal is to succeed, he will need to go beyond his brotherband training. He will need to challenge the pirate one-on-one, knowing only one of them will survive.

The epic series from Ranger's Apprentice author John Flanagan continues, delivering pulse-pounding adventure and fun.

Critic reviews

"Picking up the story soon after events in The Invaders (2012), this engaging sequel opens aboard the Heron as Hal, his fellow Skandians, and their friend Lydia sail up a river in search of Zavac, the ruthless pirate who has stolen a precious relic from their village. Welcome humor lessens the dramatic tension at times, and the shipmates’ individuality and comradeship make their adventures more meaningful. [This] novel provides a satisfying conclusion to the three-book cycle that opened with The Outcasts (2011). [A] vigorous offshoot of the Ranger’s Apprentice series." (Booklist)

John Flanagan is an amazing writer

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunters to be better than the print version?

There is not much that can compare with the weight of a book in your hand but the audio version of this book is very good!

What other book might you compare The Hunters to and why?

It's predecessors The Outcasts, and The Invaders, both wonderful books as well. Also the Ranger's Apprentice Books which are the companion series.

Have you listened to any of Richard Keating’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have and he has done a great job in all of the ones I have listened to.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The wise and the cunning.

Scandians love a good Saga and so did we.

This series was very enjoyable. The narrator was exceptionally consistent in voice for the various characters, making the book come to life. I had purchased this for my boys (ages 10 - 22) to listen to on long trips. As they would play over the car stereo, I got interested and even my wife has been excited to share this adventure with our boys. Another success for John Flanagan.

Doesn't pick up where 2nd book left off

The beginning is a little confusing as the 3rd book does not pick up where the 2nd one left off.

Smart for kids and adults

I love the main character and all his companions. True that nothing truly bad ever happens, but you don't have to worry about falling in love with a character and having them die on you. The characters are smart and they all have their day in the story, so the main character isn't the only one with awesome power. I also like how the characters use their brain and their brawn. Its a wonderful story

This almost tops Ranger's Apprentice...

for years I've been listening to the Ranger's Apprentice. I've enjoyed John Flanagan's stories read by John Keating. Having always ignored Brotherband for some reason. It was a mistake! Hal and crew of the Herron have made me proud to have raised two boys that can take care of themselves.

Great as Should Be.

Any additional comments?

Great story by John as usual. Picks up right where it should. Finish off with this great ending!

disappointing

The characters stupidity wears on you after a while and Flanagan's need to explain everything is tiring as well. Things were very formulaic and there were no suprrises. This series should have ended on book 2 but apparently Flanagan was in this one for the money. The performance was decent. Although it seemed the accents for the characters in far away lands were very similar to the Scandian's and each other. There was a point in part 2 where the audio seemed to be messed up as well. I would say if you came this far give it a try if you feel the need for completion. You will get a solid ending.

I couldn’t put the book down.

I wish the series was a longer adventure . The characters were quick to grow on me I started to trust that each had his or her own job under control.
