Publisher's summary

Don't Sweat. Don't Laugh. Don't draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can't run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn't hurt him and he doesn't have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It's the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.
When he's chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene's carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He's thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

Critic reviews

“Runnette does an excellent job of slowly adding layers of emotion and confusion to the character, and his cool delivery of the narration adds to the suspense.” —AudioFile Magazine

“The scenario of Andrew Fukuda's ‘The Hunt' is so wildly fantastic (in a good way) that narrator Sean Runnette delivers just what this story needs: a clear, steady voice.” —The Los Angeles Times

Derivative, predictable and illogical.

Would you try another book from Andrew Fukuda and/or Sean Runnette?

Sean, yes.

Do you think The Hunt needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Oh God no. All the while I am listening I am thinking "The Hunger Games...". The plot and characters are so much like Collins' that I want to scream. Her book didn't warrant sequels. A predictable novel derived from one equally predictable, even less so.

Any additional comments?

Even after granting the premiss, a necessity when reading speculative fiction, I am severely distracted by the notion that there is no way it could work. The heapers keeping their identities secret over lifetimes, when a minor cut, five o'clock shadow, or stinky underarms could give them away? Please. That said, Fuduka's writerly skills are good enough that I haven't given up on it yet.

C+/B- last paragraph of the book was a cliffhager

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The violence was so unnecessary, however, it was an interesting take on vampires in reverse.

If you’ve listened to books by Andrew Fukuda before, how does this one compare?

No, I have not listened to another of his books and I wonder if I will waste a credit on another of his books.

Which scene was your favorite?

The last paragraph was intriguing, but not enough, I do not think I'll get book two to find out about the last paragraph. I do not give spoilers, sorry.

Could you see The Hunt being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No, there was not enough information in book 1, maybe if book 2 picks up.

Any additional comments?

I felt there were loose ends, but book 2 may clear up the issues?

You will not be bored!

This well-written dystopian novel will hold your attention throughout the entire book. Sean Runnette does a fantastic job narrating. Can't wait to start the next one!

Loved The Hunt in Audibook form

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunt to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed both equally but it was definitely enjoyable listening to the story. The Narrator was great!

What did you like best about this story?

I love the complexity of the world. The steps Gene has to take to blend in while bizarre are completely unique to this story.

What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The creepy factor in his voice is what sold me on the audiobook in the first place. If I didn't like it so much I probably wouldn't of bought it in all honesty.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, but then again maybe that is because I had already read the book before listening to the Audiobook.

Any additional comments?

I'll just leave off saying that I highly recommend picking this Audiobook up if you haven't done so already.

Not Twilight!!!

Great book that ends with a cliffhanger! Interesting told from human perspective in a world where creatures (likely vampires) are normal society and humans hide in the shadows.

I enjoyed this book a lot. So different!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Hunt to be better than the print version?

I wouldn't know.

What did you like best about this story?

A total vice versa vampire story! I love how the main character is considered the abnormal one and vampires are the norm. Humans are just food and in rare occasions entertainment. You just have to listen to it! Its not for everyone but then again no book is liked by everyone.

What does Sean Runnette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I personally love him from his performances of Mark Tufo books. At first you are uncertain about his voice but he really grows on you!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The unique situation is funny alone. The mannerisms of the vampires are creepy and gross but also funny to me. Not laugh out loud funny. I guess more dark humor. There are some spenseful moments when you are rooting for the humans but don't know what's gonna happen.

Any additional comments?

This book was just pure enrtertainment for me! A fun listen I didn't want to stop listening to. If you want something different this one is for you!

Held me til the very end and wanted more!

This book had me hooked from the very beginning. The storyline was original and the twists and turns in the story kept me intrigued. I’m a huge fan of the narrator, Sean Runnette! (how I initially found this book) He never disappoints. He brings the characters and their personalities to life. Keeping the listener completely engaged in the moment. The writer, Andrew Fukuda, had a way of keeping the storyline and the characters interesting and me wanting more. By the end I had felt a full range of emotions...fear, anger, sadness, happiness, etc. and just wanted more and more. I love when a book can draw me in and this one didn’t disappoint!
