Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - The best-selling Hunger Games trilogy is, without a doubt, a cultural force. She probably didn't know it at the time, but in writing her series Suzanne Collins set the standard for YA dystopian adventures. Dystopian fiction wasn't new of course, but something about this trilogy really sparked the imagination of young readers, setting the stage for a plethora of new young adult books to enter the market. If you're interested at all in this increasingly popular genre, this Essential is the perfect gateway book. —Emily

Publisher's Summary

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

    "Hungering for More"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Collins has written a story about a society gone amok. It's filled with interesting characters and a story line that kept me interested enough to have listened to this several times. Well worth the money.

    "Unbelievable!"
What did you love best about The Hunger Games?

The best narration I've heard. I felt like I was in the arena! I dodged fire balls when Katniss did! My heart raced when hers did! Finished this one the day after I started & I'm downloading 'Catching Fire' as we speak. Don't pass this book up.

    "mesmerizing story"

i couldn't wait to listen. I loved the characters. the surprises. Such an amazing and exciting story. Narrator was ok, but she was annoying with the way she said Squirrel and Alive. She was too old to play Katniss and after the 3rd book in the series, I found her portrayal of Katniss made me almost want to kill Katniss myself.

    But the story was great.

    "GRIPPING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING STORY"
If you could sum up The Hunger Games in three words, what would they be?

    CHILLING, THOUGHT-PROVOKING, SURVIVOR

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hunger Games?

Without spoiling the story for you, the one I can tell you is when the main character takes her younger sister's place when her name is drawn to be in the Hunger Game that year. This

    Which scene was your favorite?

When the heroine of the story lets down her guard and makes some alliances. She was not one to trust others, yet in this dangerous environment, she found she needed to have help to survive. In one case, she worked hard to save the life of another more than once. There were some interesting twists and turns in the plot and she figured out how to outsmart her enemies in clever ways!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Her tender treatment of her first ally after she was killed by one of the enemies. This was never done in these games. It was another way she decided to show up the people in charge of the games...and put a human face to what was normally something very vicious.

    Any additional comments?

This was a great story with interesting characters but the concept was very chilling. It is not the genre of book I normally read. I don't like futuristic books. This one came across more ordinary in many ways...just scary. It was closer to what we have only 50 yrs. or so in the future. There were too many aspects of this story that made it quite chilling. I'm not sure I want to see a movie of it. I think it would be too scary to see it in living color even though it wasn't as gory as it could have been!

I enjoyed hearing it on Audible. I could close my eyes and listen or listen to it while I was ironing or doing other things around the house.

    "Great Book!!"

I really enjoyed the story and I am waiting with anticipation to see the movie. However, I did not care for the narrator of this story, something about the way she spoke as the younger children just irritated me. I only wish I had had the time to read the novel for myself but thank you audible for making available for all to enjoy no matter how hectic our lives are!

"Wish I had know this was the first in a Trilogy"
Would you listen to The Hunger Games again? Why?

I would not listen to it again only because I want to use the time to listen to something new.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Katniss, of course. She is so young and naive, so unaware of her innate stength, and who she is and who she could become.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene is one of the earliest scenes, where she volunteers to be tribute in place of her beloved younger sister.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book had the same effect on me as when I read about the Romans and the Gladiaters facing lions in the arena.

    Any additional comments?

This book is thought provoking and captivating. I was almost angry though at the ending, very let down! Until I found a book review online and discovered it was the first in a trilogy. Should have realized that the
