Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential - It doesn’t matter that John Green’s target audience is teenagers – his characters are smart, honest, and funny no matter how old you are, and the universal themes captured in this book are, well, universal. Terminal cancer may not be the most uplifting of plotlines, but don’t let that stop you from listening to this wonderful story. Narrator Kate Rudd is most impressive in handling all of the male and female characters – young and old, American and Dutch alike – and is definitely a rising (no pun intended) star. — Diana D.

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Best Teens Category, 2013

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

What the Critics Say

"An electric portrait of young people who learn to live life with one foot in the grave. Filled with staccato bursts of humor and tragedy, The Fault in Our Stars takes a spin on universal themes - Will I be loved? Will I be remembered? Will I leave a mark on this world? - by dramatically raising the stakes for the characters who are asking." (Jodi Picoult, best-selling author of My Sister’s Keeper and Sing You Home)

"It's a testament to John Green's writing and Kate Rudd's narration that, in a book about teenagers with cancer, there are still plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Green's teens are precocious and clever, and Rudd sells it, delivering every 'or whatever' with perfect teenage inflection and fully inhabiting protagonist Hazel as she navigates the world with lungs ravaged by cancer. When Hazel has trouble breathing, we hear it in the way Rudd gasps and pants between words. It's a sad, funny, smart, beautiful book." (AudioFile)

    "Keep writing!"

I’m so glad this had a realistic ending. John writes so well. I’ve read and will continue to read YA novels because for the most part I’ve never grown up ~ but mostly because the language is not so crude. I abhor authors that feel it necessary to use crude language every other word. Considering the number of words in the English language I believe it’s possible to be descriptive without swearing every other word. So thank you for a book that is well written, interesting, and uses lots of description without swearing all the time. Keep on keeping on!

    "So sweet - so sad"

It is about teenagers, but adults should love it too - I did and I am in my 60s. The characters are so engaging and believable. The agony of a parents knowing their children will die, but hoping nonetheless that they will survive, is overwhelming. The love the ill teenagers feel for one another is amazing. Please do not miss listening to this book.

    "YA Lit??"

This is young adult literature? About the only thing that's teenage about it is the fatalistic tone and dramatic sense of sarcasm. As a high school principal most of the teenagers I know are dramatic, but they're a lot more positive and a lot less whiny and contemplative about the universe. They are wrapped up in themselves like these characters are but you'll also find a healthy dose of optimism, even among those that are chronically ill or homeless. What irks me about this book is the blatant disregard of everything we try to teach teens about underage drinking, immoral conduct, and adult bashing. While the dialogue does contain witty repartee and snippets of classical poetry, it truly is difficult to imagine 16 and 17-year-old characters reciting poetry to each other while playing video games. I work with kids. I can't suspend disbelief that much. Too much to roll your eyes at in this book.

"A great example of John Green's work"

I must say that I'm not crazy in love with the characters; but that's kinda the point. Each person described in this book is believably flawed, and though I hate the decisions they make, I get that it's normal for people to do stupid things. The writing is fantastic. John Green is a very talented writer, and he does a great job building people and places that feel like they matter. The narration is great as well. Brilliance Audio do a great job with the books they cover.

This live story could have been cliche, but it wasn't. It was clever, and touching. I loved the narrator.

    "CHANGED MY LIFE!"

I hated books. Let me rephrase this I HATED BOOKS FOREVER. So I found this app on the App Store and I got the Fault In Our Stars. From that point MY VIEWS ON BOOKS CHANGED! This book is just so immersive and emotional. It just made me be Hazel or any other character.I like the way that in this story the male character is not the hero but in fact the victim and that just brings a whole new perspective into the book. I really don't know what to say to be honest it's that good.

"Bittersweet, but quite similar to others in genre"

There seems to be rave reviews for this book and its counterpart film, and while I understand that it is tragic I just feel I've read similar novels in the past.

The tone resembles My Sister's Keeper in many ways, written in the perspective of teenagers suffering from cancer and attempting to lead as normal a life as possible. And while it's sweet and sad, I just don't feel it was written that spectacularly. The story content is important, but the writing falls a little short - but I'm assuming that as this is more for young adults, it is geared in this way as well.

And I may sound completely heartless but the build-up to the reveal was overdone, and the ending was drawn out for far too long that it was an anti-climax. That could be the author's intention to make death seem as if a passing ship. A little disappointed overall.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to anyone not just a young adult. The story is interesting and pleasantly written with a wonderful voice that leads you into it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fault in Our Stars?

The travel to Amsterdam on the plane.

    "Dying"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Fault in Our Stars to be better than the print version?

Any version. The read one has its undisputable appeal.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Fault in Our Stars?

No particular moment, just overall feeling from the book. Sad book with hopes shattered, dreams we know are only dreams and love found and lost. I felt miserable in the course of reading and was happy once I had finshed it. I cannot make up my mind if I run through it so quickly over one weekend because I so much wished it ended soon or just because it was really a good book. Decide yourself.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

You cannot enjoy this really, too much of personal misery involved, and, knowing how a misery (albeit much different one) feels, it only revives your own feelings. However the scene just after Anne Frank's house was satisfying. You expect and want and wish for this to come. If I enjoyed something in particular, it was the banter with Isaac. It is exactly the way how one can at least partly shield of the crap in one's life. I would also like to mention that the parents are great. Both couples. As for some reviews - I do not think Augustus changed in any way towards the end of the book. Maybe the reviewer got it a all wrong, maybe I just judge according to my own perception.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I almost did. I liked it. It is marvelously written. I will never listen to it again. I will see the movie. Once and alone.

    Any additional comments?

As above; a very good book. Actually a book that I would put at any "must read" list. Nevertheless it is likely my top five heartbreaking books I ever encountered and I likely ever will. I am not likely to go through this again.
