Publisher's summary

The highly anticipated new book from the acclaimed author of The Accident Season is a gorgeous, twisty story about things gone missing, things returned from the past, and a group of teenagers connected in ways they could never have imagined.

One stormy Irish summer night, Olive and her best friend, Rose, begin to lose things. It starts with simple items like hairclips and jewelry, but soon it's clear that Rose has lost something much bigger, something she won't talk about, and Olive thinks her best friend is slipping away.

Then seductive diary pages written by a girl named Laurel begin to appear all over town. And Olive meets three mysterious strangers: Ivy, Hazel, and her twin brother, Rowan, secretly squatting in an abandoned housing estate. The trio are wild and alluring, but they seem lost, too - and like Rose, they're holding tight to painful secrets.

When they discover the spellbook, it changes everything. Damp, tattered and ancient, it's full of hand-inked charms to conjure back things that have been lost. And it just might be their chance to find what they each need to set everything back to rights.

Unless it's leading them toward things that were never meant to be found....

Critic reviews

"Fowley-Doyle is herself a literary spell caster, conjuring up a suspenseful and sensual ambiance.... This smart and sexy page-turner that readers will want to devour and share with their friends is a real find." (School Library Journal, starred review)

"Fowley-Doyle's lush, atmospheric storytelling contrasts brilliantly with her characters' teenage normalcy - drinking, skiving, and cursing while mostly loving their parents and sticking up for each other. Readers will need patience to untangle the plot's silver threads, but those who savored Fowley-Doyle's previous The Accident Season will relish this as well." (Kirkus)

"Complex, ambitious, magical." (Daily Mail)

timey-wimy

an interesting coming of age set in Ireland. The back and forth of viewpoints threw me, but mist of that was from half listening.

Not bad, just not my cup of tea

It wasn't terrible. The story may be good after a second go through. I found it hard to follow, some parts a bit confusing, but I enjoyed the narrator. They're actually what kept me from stopping after not getting what's going on half way through. There was parts that I did find interesting and despite not quite following it at first I was constantly trying to put pieces together as it went. Just not my cup of tea, it felt more like a mystery than a fantasy. I'll be listening to it again though, that's why it isn't a 3 star.

So much about magic is intent

This book was full of vibes that feel nostalgic to me. Relatable characters, a fun mystery, and the dark things that happen to us and the people we love. What spells would you weave for them?

enchanting

Really enjoy how Moira Fowley-Doyle weaves the magical into the everyday with an eerie atmosphere. How everything we do (from the way we dress to the words we choose) is like casting a spell. All three narrators did a good job of capturing their (& all the) characters. I liked seeing them grow in their relationships & themselves.
It was both heartwarming & heartbreaking.

Seemed more for teen

Hard to follow and topic too juvenile for me. I just couldn't get into it

I love this book!

let me start by saying that the narrators were fantastic and the really made this story pop. not only were their accents delightful under really drew you in, but they distinguished well between characters invoice them in a way where you could really tell whose voice is was not only by the sound but by the way they spoke. the story itself is whimsical and atmospheric. I've seen people say that it's slow but in truth I find it at a reasonable pace for a story that takes place in a realistic setting with realistic characters in a modern-day time. not to mention that it portrays rather well with teens in their environment and situation would do. so I love the story and really loved twists that came near the end and how you are slowly given clues that when things are revealed, it's a satisfying moment.
