Editorial reviews

Anna Godberson, writer, and Nina Siemaszko, performer, continue their tetralogy of young adult novels set in the upper echelons of Manhattan’s socialite shenanigan-shapers around the turn of the 19th century with Rumors. a continuation of the Holland sisters’ misadventures that began in the novel, The Luxe. As with the earlier novel, Rumors is gossipy, adventurous, enlaced with descriptions of opulence and beauty, and designed to hit upon the social high points of books from Twilight to Pride and Prejudice: unrequited love, star-crossed love, and love in cool clothes.

Publisher's summary

After bidding good-bye to New York's brightest star, Elizabeth Holland, rumors continue to fly about her untimely demise.

All eyes are on those closest to the dearly departed: her mischievous sister, Diana, now the family's only hope for redemption; New York's most notorious cad, Henry Schoon-maker, the flame Elizabeth never extinguished; the seductive Penelope Hayes, poised to claim all that her best friend left behind including Henry; even Elizabeth's scheming former maid, Lina Broud, who discovers that while money matters and breeding counts, gossip is the new currency.

As old friends become rivals, Manhattan's most dazzling socialites find their futures threatened by whispers from the past. In this delicious sequel to The Luxe, nothing is more dangerous than a scandal . . . or more precious than a secret.

Overall I enjoyed the book.

My fiance had had it in her Library since I had nothing to read so, I started the series. Overall, I have been enjoying the books. Everything has been going the way I had wanted it to until this book... haha! Anyways I am ready to start the third book and see what lies ahead.

Overall uneventful

Terrible ending. Boring with descriptions. Nothing actually happens in the story line. Lots of inner monologue.

Good story; TERRIBLE mispronunciations

I enjoyed the story; however, I find it hard to believe that there are so many mispronounced words- and I'm talking COMMON words. Is there no review of the audio before it is published? It is especially disturbing that there are so many gaffes in light of the fact that this is marketed as a young adult audiobook- instead of improving the vocabularies of young listeners, it will impress on them the wrong way to pronounce things! Unfortunately, the entire series is read by the same person.

Improvement from the first

Overall, great improvement from the audio and voice actor since the first book. I wish they still put a little more pause between the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. Story is just as good.

disappointing

I enjoyed this book until the end. The book needed to continue. Perhaps I am not a realist but when the book ended all I could feel was let down.

A TRAGIC love story

This book does not have a happy ending and I realize there isn't always a happy ending, however, I want something positive to come out of a story I read. I didn't get anything from this book, it's just tragedy after tragedy. Ugh. dissapointed. There was only one scene of love making which I appreciated. I don't need those kinds of details.
