Editorial reviews

Editors Select, March 2014 - Lauren Oliver penned one of my all-time favorite YA trilogies, Delirium but it was her non-dystopian (though still fantastical) Before I Fall that really bowled me over with its narrative maturity and a complexity that didn’t lose steam. And Sarah Drew delivered a truly authentic narration for all four books. Needless to say, I’ve been looking forward to her new standalone Panic for a long time and so far it doesn’t disappoint. As with Oliver’s other books, reading this I felt like I was back on the ground in my teenage years, as she deals friendship, loyalty, envy, and hopes for the future in an absolutely realistic way. I like a first love storyline as much as any YA listener, but its Oliver’s ability to harness all the other stuff about growing up that sets her apart from her contemporaries. Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a poor town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: Because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She'd never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game; he's sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he's not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them - and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

In this gritty, spellbinding novel, New York Times best-selling author Lauren Oliver delivers a gripping narrative of friendship, courage, survival, and hope.

engrossing

the book defines what it means to live in fear and not be afraid of the outcomes.

Great book! Worth the read!

For me, it was a tad slow in the beginning... but push through it and it gets better, and better, and then awesome! 🙂

Amazon show was much better

The amazon version of the show was much better. Cool idea but feel flat. Heather and Bishop story line was annoying and boring and same with Nat and Dodge.

like the story, but hated the bad language

The story was unique. it held my interested. I like the characters development & home lives molding their personalities. I almost stopped listen due to all the harsh and garish language. Taking the Lord's name in vain often. Wish I could recommend the book to friends, but can't due to the language.

Decent YA story; Great narrator

I liked the story okay, although I was expecting it to be a little more exciting than it was (given the premise of the book). But the narrator did a great job! I actually looked up more books she has done so I can enjoy those as well!

Panic: a story of adventure and love (kinda)

What made the experience of listening to Panic the most enjoyable?

The storyline is incredible! The book itself was well written and interesting with plot twist and new discoveries, over all really amazing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Panic?

Of course each of the panic games were memorable in their own way but I would say the most memorable moment came when I found out who the game makers were... Needless to say I did not see that coming.

Did Sarah Drew do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I guess she did an okay job differentiating the characters but I found her voice to be rather annoying at times.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction this time.

Any additional comments?

Book was good narration iffy at best.

Great book

I loved the book, storyline, and endimg. the best part is Sarah Drew narrating. She makes you believe the characters and feel like you are part of it.

Meh

Excellent concept, excellent narrator, but the plot just devolves into endless teen romance angst. Disappointing.

TV show is WAY better

I was thrilled to download this book. My husband and I binged watched the show on Prime and I was so excited to have downloaded the book. I was thinking the book- like most book made into tv show/movie adaptations- would be even better... I was so wrong. They writes for the TV show took out the small important parts and ran with a much better story. As far as the book goes; Heather is hard to relate too. Her friend Nat comes across as weak and fake. Bishop is a little pathetic and very “whoa is me”. Dodge, who is supposed to be a main character barely has a good story line. And lastly, my favorite character from the tv show was barely even a blimp in the book. I don’t normally give bad reviews. I usually just shrug it off and let it go but I bought this book with extremely high hopes and was highly disappointed. I almost always prefer book over the movies but this one time that is not the case. Even had I read first and watched later I still feel that the story line for the main characters would have fallen short.

great narration!

The narrator does an incredible job of changing her voice for the characters it made the book so much easier to listen to. And if you're trying to choose between watching the movie and listening to the book please listen to the book 1st it is way worth it!
