Publisher's summary

The Selection meets Reign in this dazzling trilogy of interwoven novels about three girls on a quest for freedom and true love from number-one internationally best-selling author Richelle Mead.

In the second installment of the number-one New York Times best-selling Glittering Court series, Richelle Mead goes beyond the glitz and glamour, delving into the dark, political underbelly of their world through the eyes of one girl who dares to fight for her freedom.

A refugee of war, Mira was cast out of her home country and thrust into another, where the conditions were inhospitable at best. In a life-altering twist of fate, she is given the chance to escape once more, and she takes it, joining the Glittering Court.

For a select group of girls, the Glittering Court offers a shot at a life they've only ever dreamed of, one of luxury, glamour, and leisure. But for Mira it means further persecution, not only from her fellow Glittering Court jewels but from her suitors as well - men she would potentially be expected to give her life to.

By day she goes through the motions, learning the etiquette and customs that will help to earn her anonymity, even making a couple true friends in the process, the forthright ladies' maid Adelaide and the ambitious laundress Tamsin. But by night Mira hatches a different plan entirely - one that, if exposed, could get her hanged in the highest court of Adoria.

Midnight Jewel is the extraordinary story of a girl with few options who courageously forges a new path, finding love, passion, lifelong friendships, and maybe even a way to freedom.

Not Richelle Mead's best...

I have never been more disappointed in a Richelle Mead book. I am typically a huge Mead fan but this book was a drag..I kept waiting for it to get better but then it was over. I'm not sure I'm into the whole same story different perspective thing b/c for me this book was just not that great. It might have been the narrator but honestly she wasn't bad so I don't think so. if your looking for a great Mead book try her Dark Swan series.

Great Part 2

Most trilogies do a good job because the author usually has a clear concept from beginning to end and a purpose behind each book in a triology. So far, this trilogy fits that description. I like that each book follows the view of one of the 3 main characters within the same setting. Things that weren't a big deal to one girl is a massive issue for another. There is not a lot of rehashing which is nice and keeps the stories from being redundant and boring, but enough so you know where the story falls in alignment with the other time lines. I am really excited to read the final book as each story builds with intensity, plot twists and turns.

An Okay Sequel

I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I did the first one. There were times it was hard to really get into it I just had to struggle and learned just to finish it. I did like the character of Grant, and I didn’t mind the protagonist in the story but her life got boring at times. I’m not sure why I felt this way because it was very action-packed. Maybe it was just how Kyla read the story?

I will say that it it was nice to see the point of view from one of the other members of the glittering court. In the first book you find that she’s sneaking out at night but do not know the reason for it. You discover it in this book.

Her different accents are part of her character

I would recommend to anyone! Please note the different accents she uses is apart of her character. The narrator was portraying her correctly.

Fun but ridiculous

Well, I loved this book, but I must say that it jumped the shark about halfway through. I was able to ignore it and finish the book and it was great fun, sort of like eating mental candy. Not literature, not deep, but shallow and sweet.

Awkward Writing, Awkward Narration

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Die hard Richelle Mead fans.

What do you think your next listen will be?

A romance novel.

How could the performance have been better?

If the narrator could keep her accents consistent and better performed. The protagonist has an accent in the book, and the narrator made her sound like five different nationalities within five minutes. It was, frankly, horrible.

What character would you cut from Midnight Jewel?

Tom the Pirate. What a weird side-plot, and her dealings with Tom made me dislike Mira, the protagonist, quite a bit.

Any additional comments?

The book was a disappointment, and the narrator did it absolutely no favors. I regret buying this audiobook.

A Bit Draggy

Mead's stories are typically addictive. I finished one series every couple of weeks for Vampire Academy, Bloodlines, Age of X, Dark Swan, and Georgina Kincaid. Emily Shaffer was my favorite narrator, and Jennifer Van Dyck my least favorite (mature voice too old for character). But each series went at a fast clip and was hard to put down.
The Glittering Court is the only series without a supernatural element and I admire Mead's semi-historic endeavor without the low-hanging fruit of erotica or the escape through the supernatural. The first book in Glittering Court was fascinating enough as I tried to figure out the world constructed within. Kristen Sieh did a decent job narrating as her accent variations covered mostly white English speakers within the UK region. Her narrator's accent also stayed consistent with her protagonist's accent.
Midnight Jewel, on the other hand, is about the most mysterious character of the 3, Mira, who is supposed to have inimitable linguistic talent. The problem here with this sequel is 2-fold:
1. the emotional tone does not ring true: the sisterhood thickness felt more genuine in the first book and much more of a stretch in this book. Mira's attachment to Tamsin feels unwarranted and forced. More importantly, Mira's love development with Grant feels melodramatic and tedious. Grant's avoidant behavioral pattern and anxious attachment mode seem worthy of a psychology seminar but is painfully annoying when Mira obsesses over his every withdrawal and/or advance. Mira seems a rather incongruous character with her simultaneous inexperience in sexual love and experience in sexual abuse. Overall, I feel disinterested in her romance.
2. Narrator's accent: yes, Mira is supposed to sound a bit Caribbean Creole and Kyla Garcia's interpretation of that accent is OK. The problem is that Garcia's narrator's accent is flat American, which is very jarring and does feel inconsistent. I'm assuming that narrating everything in a Caribbean accent is more difficult than just performing Mira's dialogue in a Caribbean accent. I think Garcia did fine in her performance of the various English accents, including the supposedly Belgium accent.
Overall: tedious and emotionally forced, makes me not want to purchase book 3.

Not worth a listen - couldn’t even listen

The performer was very draining to listen to. Should have had the same performer as the first book. I really gave this a good try but just couldn’t listen any more. I even tried to jump ahead but it was just a reiteration of the 1st book, a good deal word for word. Both the performer and the writing were nothing like the 1st book-both gave the impression of beginners. Very disappointing.

absolutely loved this story from start to finish

the story line takes off right from the start from Mirahs POT after Hearing Adilade's in Glittering Court. I absolutely love this story and have listened to it twice now and caught so many details I missed the first time. Will listen to it again in a couple months when I finish another series!

Perfect gem!!!

I am a huge fan of the Vampire Academy series, but Glittering Court replaced it as my Richelle's Mead favorite! All three books were perfect! I am so happy I discovered this gem. The only thing is that I read the three books in probably a week, because I couldn't stop myself.

The characters were very well written, not the typical cookie-cutter one-dimensional ones that we often see in YA books. The books had such a wide-span adventure, history, nature, unpredictable twists, and turns, great dialogs, struggles, humor and wins. The main heroines were strong, relatable, and human. Each had her own strength and character development. Same with the male interests - each so different from each other, not typically cookie-cutter tall-dark-and-handsome (with the instant sizzling attraction) and a perfect fit for the main heroine! Plus the wide array of interesting supporting characters with each deserving their own story told!
