Publisher's Summary

Thor's hammer is missing again. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon - the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn't just lost; it has fallen into enemy hands.

If Magnus Chase and his friends can't retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer's return is the gods' worst enemy, Loki - and the price he wants is very high.

The story just doesn't hold it together

I've enjoyed the other series but this story just isn't compelling enough or makes enough sense to hold it together.

Another great addictions to the series.

I like how we get to know more about Hearthstone's background in the second volume in the series. The initial setup for the plot felt more force than Mr. Roardian's usually cleverly plotted tales, but overall, the characters were great (including the new addition to floor 19) and the jokes were funny. :) Can't wait until the next book becomes available in my country.

Read too fast

It may just be me but I feel the narrator reads too fast at x1 speed, if you slow it down it's too slow. I couldn't find a happy median and so found the story rushed and not the relaxing listen that I hoped for. Although the story itself is well written and enjoyable.

So funny!

I listen to this while I'm walking around town and I get so many strange looks because I can't stop myself from laughing out loud at Rick Riordan's comedic writing. It is yet another hit from the myth master. I can't wait to listen to the next book.

Excellent story, not sure about the narrator

Another good book from Rick Riordan. Not sure about Kieran Culkin as a narrator.

There are places where I had to zip back and listen again because he was talking so fast. It’s nice to get variations in pace to go along with the pace of the story, but it ruins the flow if I don’t catch what’s said and have to go back. The worst bit is that he’s narrator on book 3. I can’t NOT read it, I have to know what happens 😫

my review

listened over 2 days, the final chapter cliff hanger was annoying and I can't wait for the next book. Diverse set of characters while not becoming in the way of the story and none seemed "token". Lots of relatable characters and discusses maturer themes without becoming too adult so an excellent way for children to understand the topics, such as religious and gender understanding.
I recommend this audiobook.

Another great Rick Riordan book

If you've been reading Riordan's books, you'll know they all follow the same structure : Gods meddling in the business of our heroes and sending them packing on a wild adventure. The humour is here as usual and I'm absolutely loving the diversity on the characters of this book (though it feels a bit too much like a lecture at some part - but i think it's good for a younger audience).

This is the first audiobook I've listened to by Kieran Culkin and I think he nailed it. He did a great job at giving each character their own voice and personality.

Overall good book and good performance.

Great story

How did the narrator detract from the book?

This is the 2nd really poor narrator I have had out of my books. It really takes something from the story. He really rushes, he needs to slow down. It was annoying I don't want to listen to it as if I was speed reading. If someone is trying to make books shorter it is a bad idea.

Loved it

Rick Riordan's stories are getting better with every book. This instalment is well written, exciting and spot-on in every respect. I particularly like the inclusion of increasingly diverse characters. Although these teens face supernatural dramas, they have their fair share of normal, teenage issues as well.

My only complaint is that the narrator spoke way too fast. I slowed it down to 0.8 and that was just about right. He also had a really annoying accent, however that is probably a personal bias - I always find American narrators difficult to listen to.
