Publisher's Summary

Twelve-year-old Mary Jemison took for granted her peaceful days on her family's farm in eastern Pennsylvania. But on a spring day in 1758, something happened that changed her life forever.

When a band of warriors invades the Jemisons' house and takes the family captive, Mary is separated from her parents and siblings. She travels with the Indians to southern Ohio and later to a Seneca village on the Genesee River in what is now western New York. Mary's new life is not easy. She misses her family terribly and is unaccustomed to Seneca ways. But even after her several unsuccessful attempts to run away, the Indians are kind to Mary and teach her many things about the earth, its plants, and its creatures. She develops deep bonds with the animals and even her captors. When Mary is finally given the chance to return to the world of white men, she struggles with her newfound feelings.

Based on a true story, this is the unforgettable tale of the legendary "White Woman of the Genesee."

Wonderful!

I've read this book about 3 times in paper back form and just got the audio version so I could work on things and still have a book. I love that the narrator changed her voice for characters and it made the book all the greater!

Excellent!

Educational, Well - Written, Fantastic Narrator. Although fictional, this is based on a real life story. After listening to it myself, I used this as homeschooling curriculum for my 7 year old daughter. There are so many hidden educational gems in here about everything from the conflicts between the Native American tries, white sellers and the French, to the way that cross were planted, cared for and harvested, fires created, babies raised, health needs, etc. We love it and I highly recommend it!

Good story, but lacks energy and suspense

This is a good story, but lacks the energy and suspense I was hoping for. would be great for preteens and young teenagers.
Overall, the narrator is what kept me plodding through it. The narrator did an AMAZING job and I would certainly listen to this narrator again!!

A window into 18th century colonial frontier

A fantastic view of the hardships of American colonial frontier life during the F&I war. Great points of view and detailed descriptions of eastern woodland native life and material culture. The fact that its based on a true story makes it even cooler.

Indian Captive

I enjoyed this audio book. I really let me have a glimpse into native Americans. Not all captives were slaves. Adapting to a new life was hard, but many did and thrived. It also is reality into lives taken by the native Americans. Life can be cruel.

Understanding Indian's daily life

My children 6th and 4th grade enjoyed it. It gave us a glimpse of what Indians were like. We think of them as savages and forget their humanity. Loved that we now have more perspectives of the people in our past. This book enriched our knowledge.

Great story!!

I truly enjoyed listening this story! It lets you see both sides equally and gives you an inside view on how Native Americans lived. Not only is it educational but it's very entertaining!

Boring story geared more toward 8-yr-olds...

...than teens 11 to 13. At 11-13 I was reading both "age appropriate" books as well as books written for adults. This is one I would have read when I was 7 or 8, though I think even younger kids will find it boring because there's no story in this story. It seems more like a description of some mildly interesting historical facts (whether accurate or not, I don't know) punctuated by Molly/Mary's repetitious thoughts.

Originally written in 1941, it just doesn't hold up. Read News of the World by Paulette Jiles instead!

You won't be able to put this book down... Great historical novel. Timeless story. I've read it at least five times and it never gets old.
