Publisher's summary

Gerald is only three years old when his mama leaves him alone in the house while she visits her drug dealer. When he turns nine, Gerald unhappily learns that his mama is being released from jail and wants her son back. Suddenly, he must switch from a loving home to a household dominated by his abusive stepfather. When Gerald learns a terrible secret about his stepfather and the half-sister he has grown to love, he'll have to find the courage to do what's right. Author Sharon M. Great YA Read

This trilogy was highly recommended by some young adults. As an ELA teacher, I wanted to have an idea of thia writer's style. With 2 down and 2 to go, I am impressed. This book was typical but the first one had an unexpected twist!

This is a very good book. But parents beware it has some pretty graphic stuff on molestation and child abuse. My 11 year old said it was one of the best books he read and scored 100% on his AR test. I listened along with him and was pretty set back by the molestation of his sister by her father and not wanting to go on with the book. The author does try to approach it in a manner that has tact for older elementary children but I would not recommend for younger children. Our school has it as 4th grade level. My opinion would be more of 7th/8th grade level. But that is only me. As I said my 11 year old said it was one of the best books he has ever read and he aced the AR it is up to you, but I suggest the parent listens to it first.

Karma is a bihhh

Great story overall because most of us have experienced abuse in some form and can relate whether that's 1st hand or 3rd party which is usually someone very close that you may care for and at the end of the day we all are just simply protectors who want the people we love safe. My only complaint would be the narrator to be honest if you want more readers to praise this good book maybe get female voices to actually sell all the emotions and feelings instead of males trying to duplicate that same energy!!!

A trip down memory lane

I remember loving this book when I was in junior high school.

I thought about it the other day and decided to give it a read.

The performance brought it to life and added to the emotion I felt reading this as a child.

A book I used to read when I was in middle school

I finally had the audacity to buy this audible. The reason is I have perfect memory to which I want to accomplish by reading books that I use to read when I was in middle school. This was one of them that I have read during middle school. I am currently in a university school and my gosh listening to this audiobook made me go to the past of middle school when I used to read a lot of books especially Sharon Draper books. I want to accomplish by reading the series of this book and as well copper sun. Also remind myself that I want to re-read my middle school books as I did when I first pick up these books. I just had that feeling to go to the past of my middle school.

A big story in a little book

Loved the book/story although tragic. Loved the narration. There was a lot going on in that short book.
Well done. Medals well deserved.
