Publisher's summary

Frannie doesn't know what to make of the poem she's reading in school. She hasn't thought much about hope. There are so many other things to think about. Each day, her friend Samantha seems a bit more "holy". There is a new boy in class everyone is calling the Jesus Boy. And although the new boy looks like a white kid, he says he's not white. Who is he?

During a winter full of surprises, good and bad, Frannie starts seeing a lot of things in a new light - her brother Sean's deafness, her mother's fear, the class bully's anger, her best friend's faith and her own desire for "the thing with feathers".

Newbery Honor-winning author Jacqueline Woodson once again takes listeners on a journey into a young girl's heart and reveals the pain and the joy of learning to look beneath the surface.

My point of view

I love Jacqueline’s books because they’re nice and short and they have a lot of meaning to them so I will read this 10/10 so if you’re ever looking for a good poetry book, then definitely read hers

National Treasure

Jacqueline's books should be mandatory reading for ages 9-99 and she always makes me nostalgic for easier days before loss and tragedy hardened my soul. She reminded me of our totally unnecessary and extremely thick orange shag carpet to compliment my brothers big bird yellow room circa 1975. As the late 70's bled into the early 80's we had thick orange wallpaper with black velvet texture that gave it a look of flowing lava. If I only knew then what lie ahead I would have done a few things differently.
