Publisher's summary

Troy Billings, at six-foot-one, 296 pounds, is standing at the edge of a subway platform, seriously contemplating suicide, when he meets Curt MacCrae - and emaciated, semi-homeless punk guitar genius who also happens to be a dropout legend at Troy's high school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

"I saved your life, " Curt tells Troy. "You owe me lunch."

But lunch with Curt brings more than he bargained for. Suddenly, Troy finds himself recruited as Curt's drummer for his new band. "We'll be called Rage/Tectonic. Sort of a punk rock, Clash sort of thing," Curt tells him

There's only one problem. Troy can't play the drums. Oh yes, and Troy's father thinks Curt's a drug addict. And Troy's brother thinks Troy's a loser.

But with Curt, anything is possible. "You'll see," says Curt. "We're going to be HUGE." Fortunately, mercurial Curt has an energy, enthusiam, and wisdom that is as irresistible as it is contagious. Before long, Troy is swept up by his desire to be everything Curt belives him to be.

The movie is also terrific.

One of my fav audio book

Fat Kid Rules the World" is a captivating and heartfelt audio book that delves into the life of Troy Billings, a teenager struggling with his weight and self-esteem. Written by K.L. Going, this coming-of-age story explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and the power of music.

Narrated with authenticity and emotion, the audio book brings the characters to life, allowing listeners to connect deeply with Troy and his journey of self-acceptance. The pacing of the narration is well-suited to the story, capturing both the introspective moments and the moments of high energy and tension.

One of the standout aspects of "Fat Kid Rules the World" is the exploration of the transformative power of music. Through the unlikely friendship between Troy and Curt MacCrae, a charismatic yet troubled musician, the story highlights the way music can bridge gaps and inspire personal growth.

Moreover, the book delves into important themes such as body image, bullying, and the complexities of family dynamics. It tackles these topics with sensitivity and authenticity, creating an emotionally resonant experience for listeners.

While "Fat Kid Rules the World" is a relatively short audio book, it leaves a lasting impact. Its relatable characters, honest portrayal of teenage struggles, and ultimately uplifting message make it a worthwhile listen for anyone who enjoys thought-provoking and heartwarming coming-of-age stories.

Wonderful book, excellent movie!

I really loved the story. It had such a big impact on me. I really connected to the main character, Tory Billings. Not as a 6'1", 296 lb teenager, but as someone who didn't fit in and couldn't really find their place in life throughout school before I fell into more of the punk scene. I saw the movie before I read the book. It was very well done! It mirrors the book very well! To listen to the audiobook being read by Matthew Lillard, the director of the movie, was a perfect combination. He reads it so well and so smoothly! Loved it!
