Publisher's summary

Before the accident, Lia Kahn was happy.
Before the accident, Lia Kahn was loved.
Before, Lia was a lot of things: Normal. Alive. Human.

Lia no longer believes in before. Six months after the crash that killed her, six months after being reborn, Lia has finally accepted her new reality. She is a machine, a mech, and she belongs with her own kind. It's a wild, carefree life, without rules and without fear. Because there's nothing to fear when you have nothing left to lose.
But when a voice from her past cries out for revenge, everything changes. Lia is forced to choose between her old life and her new one. Between humans and mechs. Between sacrificing the girl she used to be and saving the boy she used to love.
Even if it means he'll hate her forever.

Another excellent book in my favorite series

I've loved this series for 15 years, and this is my first time listening to the audio books. The narrator does a good job, and the story still holds up after all this time. Again, I'm frustrated reading the reviews for the second book as much as I was frustrated reading the first. If you're not a deep thinker or an existentialist, then this isn't the series for you.

In this book, we finally start to see a noticeable change in Lia as she's forced to introspectively unravel more of the systemic privileges of the life she left behind. That's how character building works by the way, for everyone leaving reviews on the first book, saying they were disappointed Lia didn't just completely transform into a different person in the span of one book. Realistically, it takes a lot of work to rewrite years of social conditioning. It's a lot of fun to hear Lia's inner dialogue as she navigates through it. As usual, she's also faced with a lot of metaphysical questions, realizations, and fears about personhood, mortality, and love, which I guess is "boring or whiny" to some, but is honestly one of the most interesting aspects of the series in my opinion, because I've had similar thoughts all my life, and it's refreshing to explore them through someone else's narrative. Makes me feel seen.

Love this series

After reading SKINNED I was hooked on this series and couldn't wait to listen to the next installment.

This book covers a lot of territory at a fast pace and is a book that teens will easily relate to.

But even adults who love young adult literature will find this series well worthwhile.
A very pleasant read.

Okay

I had a diffcult time relating and routing for the main character Lia. The entire story is about how all of the characters are 'skinners'/'mechs' and did not develop any human qaulities. I was hoping by the end I would find something that would help me feel compassion for the characters but it was robotic and lonely. Just not sure if I will be able to read the last book.

Dull, boring

I enjoyed book one enough to look forward to more. But this one feel flat.

Dragged on due to a lot of whiney b.s.

Will not be getting book 3.
