Publisher's summary

To save her life, she must risk her heart....

For 18-year-old Sidney Shaw, life pretty much sucks. Her mom's a drunk. Her dad's worse. At school, she's bullied by her ex-best friend. And cutting no longer brings the relief she craves.

When Sidney is forced into group counseling, she meets perfect, popular Arianna, the type of girl who grieves over a broken nail. But Arianna has secrets of her own. She might prove herself a friend - if Sidney can let her guard down. Then, there's Lucas, the sweet and funny new guy who sees straight through her tough, snarky facade.

But Sidney's wounds go deeper than anyone knows. When her secrets threaten to unravel her, Sidney must choose. How far is she willing to go to protect her family? And who can she turn to when the unthinkable happens?

Contains mature themes.

Very dark issues told in a non or less-explicit manner.

Of course I don't like that bad things happen to people, especially children. But they do happen and I think this book helps us to understand, empathize, and maybe even identify when someone is experiencing situations outside of our experience. And I like that good wins over evil in the end. The narration was excellent too!

Emotional and raw

The book is about such a difficult, but all too common, form of violence toward young women. It was very well written and I loved how the main character was supported and helped onto the road to recovery. Well narrated also!

A brave and unapologetic novel.

The redemptive process found in this novel is as raw as it is honest. This story hurt my heart, but it was worth the pain to gain a glimpse into situations I have not experienced. This story will stay with me for a long time.

Emotionally evoking

The story evoked a lot of painful feelings unfelt for a very long time. The story concluded with hopeful realities. I’m glad I pushed through to the end.

Thought provoking

This is a story that everyone should read. So many of our kids are facing problems they do not share. Some would if they knew how many other kids are hiding their own monsters.
Thank you for bringing light to subjects others shy away from.

Not easy to listen to, but I couldn't stop

Heartbreaking story, but one that needs to be told. Although at times it was difficult to listen to, I was thoroughly invested and couldn't stop. The narrator, Caitlin Kelly, delivered an outstanding performance.

kyla Stone's most powerful work

If you're an adult child (ACA) this book will speak to you. If you love someone who has survived sexual abuse at the hands of a care taker , you have to read this. By the 3 rd chapter you will want to finish the whole thing in one reading. it's a well written novel that grips anyone with a heart. its terrifying too. If you've survived sexual assault, especially at the hands of a guardian, it's your story . It may also be a trigger . The author was courageous in writing this. Thank You!

Did NOT expect it to be so good

Have been a fan of Kyla’s Post-Apocalyptic writings, and have pretty much given up finding more good PA audiobooks. Gave this a try because I appreciated Kyla’s other works and Was blown away. Literally could not stop once I got started. I highly recommend it, no matter what your past includes. Everyone has scars. Hope and healing are real. Good work, Kyla.

Overwhelmingly Powerful Worth Opening Yourself To

everything felt heard said growing up body changing hormones abuse trauma into words
subject matter painful would be easy to want to quit listening BUT Kyla Stone manages to put all that a teenager, in this instance a traumatised abused teenager forced to be an adult instead of having a childhood, into words using metaphors, imagery, and exact to the point descriptions to explain and remind a person how difficult it is to open up
